Position Description
Tenure track, full-time, general funds, 11-month tenure-track positions to begin approximately July 1, 2008, or thereafter, in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences Student Academic Services (CASSAS) Department at UH Manoa. The Colleges of Arts and Sciences (A&S) undergraduate curriculum objectives include integration of different fields of knowledge, development of liberal arts skills and creative imagination, understanding of one’s own values and those of others, and specialization in an A&S field. In this curricular context and in partnership with A&S department advisors and faculty, CASSAS specialist advisors assist students in their overall educational and academic planning by developing and providing advising services, activities and programs that meet students’ diverse needs and goals.

Duties
Assist students in assessing their interests and abilities, examining their educational goals, making decisions and developing short-term and long-term educational plans to meet their objectives; develop advising curriculum and teach in a variety of settings and formats, individually or as a member of a team; evaluate and monitor student academic progress and the impact on achievement of goals, including progress checks and taking appropriate institutional action; coordinate/assist in the coordination of the development, implementation, and management of academic advising programs and services, including advising tools, brochures, and promotional program material; conduct assessment, collect and distribute information, prepare formal and informal reports regarding student needs, preference and performance for use in making institutional decisions and policies; engage in professional activities in and make scholarly contributions to the academic advising field; serve as an active member, chair, or officer of department, college, university, system-wide, professional or community organizations, committees, or governing bodies; possible evening, weekend, and/or off-campus assignments to accommodate student needs; other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: At S2 level: Master’s degree, with either the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an Arts and Sciences discipline [any discipline found within the UHM Colleges of Arts & Sciences will be considered an A&S discipline; institutional verification of completion of Master’s degree requirements needed upon hire] and one year work experience in an academic environment or equivalent. At S3 level: Master’s degree, with either the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an Arts and Sciences discipline [any discipline found within the UHM Colleges of Arts & Sciences will be considered an A&S discipline] and 30 completed credits of graduate study (at time of hire) after the Master’s degree; three years of college-level academic advising experience or equivalent. For S2 & S3 levels: Knowledge of programs and services for undergraduates; familiarity with current research regarding advising issues and advising models; knowledge of student development theory; familiarity with spreadsheet, web design or database software; evidence of college-level teaching; graduate degree in an Arts & Sciences discipline.

Duties

Under the general direction of the Registrar, the Institute Academic Advisor coordinates and carries out the academic advisement of undergraduate students, with primary focus on first-time college students and students at risk academically. Supplementing the artistic advising and development by faculty mentors, the Institute Academic Advisor will introduce new students, on a one-to-one basis, to Institute academic policies and procedures, assess and identify students in academic difficulty, make appropriate referrals to Institute services, and support student retention. MedPEP Coordinator/Counselor

Position Description

This is a full-time, temporary contingent on funding, grant based assignment reporting directly to the Vice President of Student Services. This assignment includes coordinating individual assessment of academic skills, tutorial services and workshops, counseling services and programs and events that provide exposure to health professions and programs available with a focus on California institutions. Services are provided to a student population that is highly diverse in terms of academic preparation, cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds as well as physical and learning abilities. Counselor position is responsible for providing a full professional service week, which may involve off-campus visitation of sites, home visitations, conducting workshops, supervising field trips, and/or require evening and Saturday functions as part of assignment. Position will begin in August 2008 or sooner. Salary: This is a 175 day non-tenure track position contingent on funding. Placement on the salary schedule is based on education and work experience. Salary range for 2007: $45,915 - $74,059.

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM) is a multidisciplinary academic department in the College of Natural Resources (CNR). Located on the Berkeley campus, ESPM encompasses basic and applied aspects of biological, physical and social sciences as applied to natural resources and natural resource-based production systems in support of the education, research, and extension programs of CNR.

ESPM is the largest of CNR’s four departments, with an annual budget of over $61.1 million in state, federal, and private funds and 35 administrative staff. The department has 66 faculty, 48 emeriti faculty, 75 visiting scholars, specialists, and post-doctoral researchers, 72 lab assistants and staff research associates, 51 Graduate Student Instructor's, 177 Graduate Student Researcher's, and 62 undergraduate student assistants and work-study students. ESPM’s teaching programs include approximately 600 undergraduate students and 220 students at the graduate level.

We are seeking a strong leader to direct and manage our Student Services unit.

Duties
Under the direction of the ESPM Department Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Student Services Manager will serve on the four-person ESPM management team and oversee the department's Student Services unit.

The Manager will coordinate graduate and undergraduate advising services, graduate admissions and placement fellowships, GSI/GSR program support, undergraduate major declaration and transfer applications, course scheduling, enrollment management and course changes. Responsibilities will include supervising three student affairs officers, long-range planning, budget development and administration, and oversight of $1.4 million in annual student aid.

The Manager will advise the ESPM CAO, Chair, Vice-Chair for Instruction, Graduate Program Committee and Undergraduate Major Panel Chairs on the educational and administrative impact of proposed changes in policy and suggest procedures to implement new or revised policies.

The incumbent will respond to requests from campus and outside entities regarding ESPM academic programs.

The Manager will supervise the design and development of student databases and will work closely with Student Services staff and department faculty and managers to generate creative and integrative approaches to the delivery of student services.

The Manager will plan and coordinate several department-wide social events annually.

Required Qualifications

With colleagues in the VPUE, the Director organizes and oversees curricular and extracurricular content of a five-week residential summer program that extends through the freshman and sophomore years with ongoing academic support and opportunities. As AD, this individual has oversight of the academic advising for approximately 200 students, follows students’ academic progress, makes interventions for students in difficulty, and serves on the VPUE Petition Review Board.

(Note: These are not live-in residential positions.)

QUALIFICATIONS (for both positions) include:

• Advanced degree required, Ph.D. in liberal arts discipline strongly preferred.

• 3 - 5 years experience in academic advising and teaching at the undergraduate level with a diverse population of students.

• 3 + years experience planning and implementing academic programming.

• Experience conducting research at the graduate level in an academic discipline.

• Experience in a research-intensive university setting is highly desirable.

• Proven ability to structure interventions for students in academic difficulty.

Position Description

Director, Office of Student Services for Nursing & Dental Hygiene. Full Time, non-tenure track position.

Duties

Provides the leadership for university and school initiatives and programs and translates goals and objectives into operations. Implements marketing strategy to increase recruitment and retention of students in SONDH programs. Assesses, manages and improves student and faculty satisfaction via multiple pathways. Initiates, promotes and evaluates innovative programs, services and systems that will enhance linkages with faculty, students and alumni. Advises students and faculty on university and school policy and procedures. Maintains oversight for development of data systems, outcomes management and reporting processes. Oversees and directs scholarship and tuition waivers and award distribution. Monitors performance of individuals within Department of Student Services and provides ongoing feedback, coaching and support for growth. Develops ongoing plans for staff improvement that are timely, measurable and achievable. Develops management and leadership skills in others. Advises students as needed. Creates an outcomes driven environment with accountability to stakeholders. Facilitates and actively participates in school and institutional activities. Ensures multi-directional communications systems are in place. Ability to multi-task and handle complex situations. Duties may be reassigned as defined by SONDH.

Required Qualifications

For applicants meeting Assistant Specialist criteria, a Master’s Degree plus 30 credits of graduate study beyond the Master’s from a college or university of recognized standing with major work in a closely related field is required. At the assistant specialist level, there must be evidence of the ability to perform required duties, including evidence of supervision and the ability to exercise independent judgment competently in the field of specialization
