In an attempt to improve
the quality of academic advisement for the students at the University
of Florida, a 1990 task force on academic advising recommended
the creation of a University Advising Center. The Center has three
basic beliefs at its core: 1) students deserve only the best advising
system available, 2) it is vital to increase the likelihood of
a student interacting with faculty and staff in a meaningful manner,
and 3) academic advising must be closely associated with the academic
mission of the University. With these beliefs in mind the University
Advising Center was instituted. Over the past four years these
beliefs have acted as a guide as the Center has grown to meet
the demands of a rapidly changing campus. The Center has been
at the forefront of the technological changes, personalized advising,
and outreach. Evaluations of the office and its services have
been very positive.
