March 17th - 19th, for the NACADA Annual Region 8 conference.
This year's theme, Border Crossings: Advising Checkpoints from
Pre-Enrollment to Graduation , provides the opportunity for
you to present on key advising issues related to students' progression
throughout their academic career. Potential topics include:
student retention, student recruitment, 1st year programming,
probationary students, high achieving students, as well as other
topics of your choice.

2. It is with great
privilege that I announce that the Executive Director of NACADA,
Charlie Nutt , has agreed to be this year's keynote speaker.
Charlie has served in various leadership roles in NACADA including
being the 2000 National Conference Chair, served on the faculty
of the NACADA Summer Institute, Academic Advising Administrators'
Institute, and Assessment of Advising Institute. Prior to
taking on his new role in NACADA, Charlie had served as Associate
Director of NACADA since 2002.
3. This year's registration fee is $135. Remember to book your
rooms for the conference soon as we have a limited number of

Call for Proposal/ Readers/ Volunteers
Hello, Region 9!
Las Vegas, here we come! Submit your presentation proposals
for the March 11-13, 2009 Region 9 Conference in Las
Vegas, NV! Proposals will be accepted until January 30. The
Region 9 Conference website at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Regional_Divisions/region9/confindex.htm
will lead you to the proposal system. Have an idea to share? Then
write a short abstract, tell us what you plan to accomplish
and perhaps round up some colleagues to present as well and
submit it all on-line! A "Best of Region 9 Award" of approximately
$500 to the Annual Conference in San Antonio will be selected
- it might as well be yours!
We need "readers" to review the on-line proposals
and help the committee select the very best! If you would be
interested in participating in this, please contact Derek Furukawa
at derek.furukawa@unlv.edu
! We need several readers from each state in the region.
Of course, volunteers to help before and at
the conference are always needed. Contact Cheryl Tillotson at

Early Discount Date Approaching1
It
is time to plan a trip to sunny, beautiful South Carolina!!! The
NACADA Region 3 conference is only 5 weeks away. If the weather
isn't enough to get you to Columbia, SC, May 18-20, we have plenty
of professional development opportunities and social events planned
for you!
Our conference theme
of "New Vistas in Advising" has given presenters the
chance to explore a host of topics. We have sessions designed
to address how to assist students in crisis, advise at risk
students, advisement of student athletes, advisement of military
veterans, and a host of others.
In all we will offer
nearly 50 sessions.
Social activities
are planned that will provide up close South Carolina Southern
Hospitality. We have planned a welcoming session featuring NACADA
president Jenny Bloom as our keynote speaker. After Jenny's
keynote, attendees will dance to South Carolina beach music
and feast on southern bar-b-que and hush puppies. On Monday
evening, you are also invited to take a boat cruise of beautiful
Lake Murray aboard the Southern Patriot.
The
April 15 early registration deadline is fast approaching.

each Region 8 conference we like to complete a service project
which gives back to the host community. This year, we would

Nutt will be leading two NACADA workshops which are free. For

overall conference experience.
Volunteers
Needed
Below
please find the descriptions for the three categories of volunteer
opportunities. If you are interested in one or more of the categories,
just respond by clicking on one of the email addresses in the
signature block of this email and we will share the available
times with you.
It
takes many, many people to make the conference run smoothly for
all involved, so please also recruit a friend or two to help!
Registration
Table Associates: During the registration period, the
Registration Table Associates will help conference participants
to check in and receive their conference packets. During the
conference, registration table associates will be available
to respond to any conference participant questions that may
arise, as well as process the evaluations submitted after each
pre-conference or breakout session. The registration table needs
to be staffed by one Registration Table Associate during the
conference hours. Approximately 55 Registration Table Volunteers
are needed.
Session
Facilitators: Session Facilitators will introduce
the speaker(s) for each pre-conference workshop and concurrent
breakout session. They will distribute the session evaluations
at the beginning of the session, and collect them at the end
of the session. Approximately 55 Session Facilitators are
needed.
Direction
Assistants: Direction Assistants will help conference
participants find the locations of the rooms for the pre-conference
or breakout sessions they are interested in attending, as well
as conference dining locations. They will also respond to conference
participant questions regarding general hotel layout. Approximately
55 Direction Assistants are needed.
We
really do appreciate your willingness to help!
Donations:
Please
remember to drop off your raffle donations at the Registration
table when you check in.
Tuesday
is Spirit Day
Remember
to wear your institution’s colors with pride on Tuesday.
It will be great to see all of the different schools that will
be represented at the conference.

Travel:
Columbia is the state capital is serviced by a regional
airport and Amtrack. The Columbia Metro Airport is less than 15
minutes from downtown Columbia. There will be no shuttle service
from the hotel. However, there are many affordable cab companies
located outside the baggage claim area at the airport.
If
you are driving, Columbia is easily accessible from any
area of Region 3.

to Asheville, NC, I-26 towards Spartanburg, .....

areas outside region (Ga, Al, Ms) .......
Activities:
Sunday evening 6:30-9:30
will be a Welcome to South Carolina Beach Party. Take the opportunity
to dance the Shag, the state dance of South Carolina. You will
also dine on South Carolina mustard style bar-b-que, hushpuppies
and banana pudding.
Monday
evening offers two wonderful optional activities. You may decide
to take a cruise on one of the world’s largest man made
lakes, Lake Murray or you may decide to take a tour of the South
Carolina State Museum. These events are NOT included in the registration
fee. Check the region web site for details about these events.
Refund/Substitution
Policy:
If
you are required to cancel you may elect to:

transfer your conference registration to another individual from
your institution (if this person is not a current NACADA member,
they will be asked to pay the $55 membership fee)
·
apply your paid registration to another NACADA event
·
request a refund of 50% of paid registration fees in writing
·
after the beginning of the conference, NO REFUNDS CAN BE ISSUED
DUE TO FACILITY OBLIGATIONS, BUT SUBSTITUTIONS CAN BE ALLOWED

Asked Questions Format
We are excited about hosting you (and 335 of your closest advising
friends!) at this year’s NACADA Region VII Conference,
“Setting the Stage for Student Success: Academic Advising
in the Spotlight.” We wanted to provide you with some
last minute information as well as answer some quick FAQ’s
for you as you prepare for your trip to Branson, Missouri.
What is the parking
situation if I am not staying at the Chateau? The Chateau
has plenty of FREE parking for both hotel guests and visitors.
What will the
weather be like during the conference? March in southern
Missouri is pretty unpredictable….but you can check
out the latest details at

How can I check my e-mail while
at the conference? The Chateau has a FREE business center
with two computers, printing is also free. There is also free
wireless internet access in the sitting area outside of the
Great Hall (Versailles/Windsor rooms). If you are a Chateau
guest you can also access wireless internet in your hotel
room or common hotel spaces for a fee of $9.95 (for 24 hours
of service).
What should I wear? The
attire for the conference will be casual. Don’t forget
to bring your school colors for School Spirit Day on Tuesday,
March 4 th .
What are the concurrent sessions? You can find both
a schedule-at-a-glance and detailed list of pre-conference workshops

/What meals are included? Your registration fee will
cover the following: 1) hors d’oeuvres at the opening
reception on Monday evening, 2) a full breakfast buffet on Tuesday
and Wednesday mornings, 3) lunch on Tuesday, and 4) a snack
break on Tuesday before the state meetings.
What if I forgot to volunteer?
Could you still use my help? Absolutely! Due to the size
of the conference, we would happily accept more volunteers
to help facilitate what we hope will be a wonderful professional
development experience for you. Contact information for our
volunteer co-chairs can be found near the end of this e-mail,
if you’d like to pre-arrange your role. Or just stop
by the Volunteer desk to sign up to help!
