Operating Principles for Region 1 Steering Committee

 

Region 1 Governance

The Northeast Region consists of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Quebec, and the Atlantic Provinces of Canada. The Region has one Regional Chair, each US state has at least one liaison, and Canada has one or two liaisons. The liaisons represent their area and promote NACADA and academic advising within the region. Please contact anyone on the Steering Committee for more information.

 

I.   Steering Committee

The Steering Committee meets at least twice annually in person – at the National and Regional Conferences. In addition, there may be up to two teleconferences, as needed.

 

Role of the Steering Committee

•  Promote NACADA and academic advising on institutional, state, regional and national levels

•  Provide professional development and leadership opportunities for region members

•  Support the Mission and Strategic Goals of NACADA

 

II.   Steering Committee Membership and Responsibilities

 

Region Chair – Elected every two years by current Region I NACADA   members

•  Steering Committee Chair

•  regional reporting to Executive Office

•  region budget

•  conference budget approval

•  drive-in budget approval

•  appointment of Steering Committee members

•  coordinate Steering Committee meetings and teleconferences

•  coordinate Academic Advising Excellence Award program

•  attend region and national conferences

•  attend region conference planning meetings

•  oversee all activities of the Region

Past Region Chair

•  serve in an advisory capacity to the region chair and the region conference chairs

•  support current region chair

•  attend region and national conferences, if possible

 

(Terms for Region Chairs begin at the end of the annual National Conference. Terms for all other Steering Committee members begins at the annual Regional Conference)

 

Current Conference Chair(s)

•  liaison between conference committee and steering committee

•  chair conference planning committee

•  conference budget approval

•  attend region conference

•  attend national conference and conference chair training session, if possible

 

Past Conference Chair

•  serve in an advisory capacity to the current conference chair

•  assist with conference budget

•  assist Site Selection Chair

•  attend region and national conferences, if possible

Future Conference Chair (when possible)

•  support current conference chair

•  review budget procedures

•  attend region conference

•  attend national conferences, if possible

Site Selection Chair

•  establish sites for future NACADA Region 1 Conferences, for two years forward (for example, the first Site Selection Chair, appointed in 2008, will establish site for 2010 and 2011 regional conferences. The next Site Selection Chair will be appointed in 2010, and will establish sites for 2012 and 2013)

•  assist in the development of annual region budget

•  attend region conferences

•  attend national conferences, if possible

Communication and Membership Chair

•  ensure that Region 1 web materials are accurate

•  ensure that Region 1 newsletter is coordinated and published at least four times per year

•  coordinate membership campaigns within region

•  coordinate Region 1 Expertise and Interests database

•  assist in the development of annual region budget

•  record and post minutes of Steering Committee meetings and teleconferences

•  attend region and national conferences, if possible

Awards and Recognition Chair

•  assist Region Chair in coordination of Academic Advising Excellence Award program

•  coordinate all other regional award and scholarship activities, including notification of membership, review of   application, communication with winners, etc.

•  provide Communication chair with updates for regional website regarding awards and scholarships

•  assist in the development of annual region budget

•  attend region and national conferences, if possible

Budget Chair

  assist Region Chair and Conference Chair in development of annual budgets

•  reconcile all reimbursement requests

•  reconcile annual Region and Region Conference Budgets

•  participate in goal setting for the region

•  attend region and national conferences, if possible

 

Area Liaisons

•  present state/province issues to steering committee

•  promote NACADA and academic advising throughout state/province

•  identify NACADA members in the area for involvement in regional activities

•  participate in goal setting for the region

•  assist in the development of the annual region budget

•  assist in NACADA regional activities

•  attend region conferences

•  attend national conferences, if possible

 

•  Area Liaison Information

Area Liaisons will be appointed by the Region Chair and will serve for two years. Area Liaisons can serve for two consecutive terms. The Region Chair and Steering Committee are charged with securing state liaisons who represent the diversity of our organization.

Region One includes the following areas:

Canada, Atlantic Provinces – 1 or 2 Liaison(s)

Canada, Quebec – 1 Liaison

Connecticut – 1 Liaison

Maine – 1 Liaison

Massachusetts – 1 Liaison

New Hampshire – 1 Liaison

New York – 2 Liaisons, representing Eastern and Western New York

Rhode Island – 1 Liaison

Vermont – 1 Liaison

In the event that we are unable to secure a liaison for each area, we may opt for one liaison for Connecticut and Rhode Island, 1 for New Hampshire and Vermont, 1 for Canada and 1 for New York. Every effort will be made, however, to have a full contingent of liaisons.

In the event of an unexpected vacancy the Region Chair and Steering Committee will appoint an appropriate replacement to complete the remainder of the term. This replacement can, if desired, complete two full terms in addition to the replacement period.

IV.   Annual Conference

Annual Region 1 conference are held in locations accessible to all areas of Region 1. When possible, the conference will rotate among the areas as follows:

•  Maine
•  New York
•  Massachusetts
•  Vermont
•  Connecticut
•  Canada
•  Rhode Island
•  New Hampshire

If for any reason an area cannot host, the next area in the rotation will be the host site.

V.   Region Awards and Scholarships

Each year Region 1 chooses to recognize excellence in advising with awards and scholarships. Information about these programs, as well as a list of past winners, can be found on the Region 1 website.

 

VI.   Amendments to Operating Principles

  • Amendments to the Operating Principles of Region One can be initiated by any member of the region.
  • Suggestions for change must be submitted to an individual’s area liaison by February 1 st .
  • The Steering Committee must approve all changes prior to membership vote. Changes will be official when made by a majority vote at the regional conference.
  • Communication of changes to this current document will be made by electronic communication to regional membership.

VII.   Review of Operating Principles

The Operating Principles must be reviewed at least every three years to be current with the NACADA mission and goals.
