Student Learning Outcomes are Key to Assessment

Wednesday, March 26; 9:30 am - 12:30 pm; $40

Presenters: Elizabeth Higgins & Susan Campbell, University of Southern Maine

Abstract: Experience one of the vital components of assessment ~ the development of Student Learning Outcomes. Identifying student learning outcomes grounds the academic advising program within the teaching and learning paradigm and, in the short and long haul, helps you and your institution move toward continued program improvement.

Come to this working session and learn about the critical role student learning outcomes play in the assessment process. You will become familiar with CAS standards, academic advising missions and the mapping of student learning outcomes across the student experience. Join your colleagues in the assessment experience and enjoy the thrill of developing measurable student learning outcomes as you help your students and advisors create a path for success!

Supervisors Can Be Teachers Too!

Wednesday, March 26; 10:00 am - Noon; $25

Presenter: Rodney Mondor, University of Southern Maine

Abstract: As we constantly face the pressure of "doing more for less," it is important that we take the time to motivate/appreciate our staffs. As the supervisor, you are also the teacher, helping your staff grow, and develop as professionals. Whether your staff is large or small, it is important that they feel supported, appreciated and recognized. This interactive session will help participants see how to: analyze current work environments, assess staff member performances, motivate individuals and team, recognize staff and set goals as a team.

Now is the time to invest in the future of your staff. Take a look at what will motivate your staff to not only succeed, but excel.

Effectively Supporting Student Motivation for Change: Motivational Interviewing as an Advising Communication Technique

Wednesday, March 26; 10:00 am - Noon; $25

Presenters: Lorri LaMagdelaine, Michaelene Cronin, & Christopher Osgood

Landmark College

Abstract: College students undergo a great deal of change as emerging adults. How do college students undergo the change process? How can advisors support student motivation for change? As emerging adults, college students are learning how to autonomously make decisions and are frequently ambivalent about making a change. This workshop will introduce the basic theories and principles of Motivational Interviewing as a communication technique to support student change. Dr. James Prochaska's stages of readiness for change will also be reviewed. Participants will have the opportunity to identify and respond to ambivalence and resistance to change, and to practice strengthening motivation for change. Participants will be encouraged to reflect upon the application of MI to their specific work with students.
