2012 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

 Advising from Reel to Real

We had a great response to our Call for Proposals!  The program committee is busy reading and selecting the sessions that will make up our wonderful conference program!

As advisors, we approach our jobs not as actors but as individuals concerned with student success. Advisors are real, students are real, the situations they present are real. Some days we rely on our Basic Instincts to meet the needs of our students. At times our students expect us to be The Wizard of Oz and solve all of their concerns. Some students come in and see you once and the next thing you know, they are Gone with the Wind. As advisors, we can end our day feeling like Rocky or as though we been through Apocalypse Now. How do we, as advisors, move from a script, to addressing the real needs of our students. How do you bring the directors, producers and audience together on your campus to make a masterpiece? What are some of your programs that did not end up on the cutting room floor but have survived to become show stoppers?

If you have ideas, research or best practices to share related to advising in this new age where we must move from perceptions to reality, plan to come to Foxwoods/MGM Grand in Connecticut to present at the Region One conference. Advisors in the Northeast have counted on the Region One conference to provide proven programs of advising success for over twenty five years. For advising administrators, faculty advisors, administrative professionals and seasoned and new advisors alike, the Region One conference delivers innovation and offers great opportunities to network, reconnect and recharge.

We rely on our members to submit a variety of topics for presentation. If you would like to see more variety or different topics presented at the Region One Conference, be sure to submit a presentation proposal!

Looking for a specific topic idea for a presentation? Based on feedback from the 2011 conference, Region 1 advisors are interested in hearing about a variety of topics including:

  • Distance learning & web development
  • Supporting new advising professionals
  • Academic coaching, strengths-based advising and other approaches to advising
  • Advising models & other issues for multi-campus institutions
    Two-year and community colleges
  • Career paths & opportunities for careers in academic advising
  • Research, theory & assessment in academic advising
  • Holistic, integrated and developmental advising
  • Collaborative work with other campus departments
  • Working with and advising special populations – difficult students, multicultural students, student athletes, students with disabilities, international students, probation students, high-achieving students, multi-generational student populations and others
  • Structure and content of advising sessions
  • Supervising professional or student staff
  • Working the “front line” in advising – dealing with advising issues as an administrative professional
  • And any new and unique advising topics that are not typically covered in conference presentations

Format options for conference sessions include paper or topic presentations, panel discussions, and roundtable discussions. Paper or topic presentations and panel sessions discuss current issues in advising. Some are based on research, some share best practices, and some are developmental, while others are theoretical. The format may be mostly lecture with a discussion following, a panel session followed by questions, or a more informal discussion. Roundtable sessions are less-structured discussions on relevant advising topics that generate audience/presenter interaction. All sessions will be approximately 1 hour long.
