NACADA Region 2 Award & Scholarship Information

Each award and scholarship have specific criteria and application processes. The awards and scholarships available for 2012 are:

We are pleased to offer these scholarships to our Region 2 Members.  Detailed information on the Region 2 Conference is available at www.nacada.ksu.edu. The criteria and applications for these awards and grants are below as is the link to the on-line submission portal.

Instructions for On-Line Submission:

  1. Enter a password - this can be simple and you can use the same one for other submissions
  2. Select your Region.
  3. Then select the award for which you are applying from the "Awards/Scholarship Category" drop down box.
  4. Be sure to write down your Award/Scholarship Nomination Number and your password, so if you have to stop and come back to the nomination form, you can do so easily! It will also be in your confirmation e-mail.
  5. Enter the information as it is requested. NOTE: The NOTIFICATION section is for you to list those people who you would want to know if you are selected for this award/scholarship. We would suggest your president/provost, your supervisors, your public relations department.
  6. You will need to upload some documents. They must be in pdf form. As these are different for each award, please see the Region Awards page for more information before you begin the submission process. you can leave and come back as long as you have not hit the SUBMIT button.

Region 2 Scholarships

Region 2 Scholarship - Student Travel Grant - to Region 2 2012 Conference
Student Grant application is open to matriculated and currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. While presenti9ng at the Region 2 Conference with a NACADA member is not mandatory, it is encouraged. Awardees will be asked to write a short article about their experience for NACADA publication.

Region 2 Scholarship - Jeff Gardner Memorial scholarship for Professional Development
The Jeff Gardner Memorial scholarship is presented as a professional development experience to a selected Region 2 NACADA member who demonstrates involvement in national, regional, state, and/or local advising organizations and exhibits the potential for regional and national leadership roles. The applicant must demonstrate on-going membership in NACADA; be a current NACADA member at the time of scholarship application; demonstrate involvement in NACADA activities through commission, state/region, task force, and/or committee participation (i.e. serving on a steering committee, as an elected chair, on a conference committee, or writing for a NACADA publication.); demonstrate involvement in NACADA state, regional and/or national conferences as a participant and/or presenter.; provide a description of goals to be accomplished through participation in the Conference.

Region 2 Excellence in Advising Awards

Region 2 Excellence in Advising -Primary Role:
Eligibility:
Individuals whose primary role at the institution is the direct delivery of advising services to students.

Criteria:
The Award Selection Committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor or faculty advisor. Such evidence may include

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Appropriate referral activity
  • Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
  • Advisee or unit evaluations (summary data)
  • Caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty, and staff
  • Meeting advisees in informal settings
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
  • Mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Participation in and support of advisor development programs
  • Perception by colleagues of nominee's advising skills or advising administration skills.
  • Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising and/or administration
  • Participation in and contribution to academic advising research and scholarship


Submission Procedures:
Nominations must contain adequate factual or narrative material that describes the extent to which an individual meets the awards criteria. Include the following items listed below. Use objective data to support the nomination is encouraged.

  1. Nomination Form: Please complete all sections of the Nomination Form. Incomplete Nomination Forms are viewed negatively by the Award Selection Committee
  2. Nomination Letter:In this letter, the nominator should summarize the nominee's qualifications and why the advisor is being nominated for this award. The nominator should describe the nominee's job (very briefly) and give specific examples of exemplary performance. The nominator should use the criteria listed above as a guide for items to include in their letter. As the list of criteria is lengthy, nominators should not attempt to elaborate on every item; please select the criteria, or other related criteria as appropriate, that best exemplify the nominee's excellence. As this is the main item to determine selection, nominators are encouraged to solicit the input of others into the content of the letter. quotes or comments from others (co-workers, supervisors, students, or other faculty/staff) may be included in the letter. This letter should be at least one page and be a maximum of three pages. (Single spacing allowed, use an 11 point or larger font)
  3. One Additional Letter of Reference Limited to two pages or less, this letter may come from anyone also writing in support of the nomination. It does not need to provide an overall summary of the nominee's qualifications. While this letter may be written by a student, letters about one student's individual experience with an advisor may not offer a broad enough view of an advisor's backgrounds and capabilities. As such, a letter from another coleague may prove more useful to the Award Selection Committee.

Region 2 Excellence in Advising - Faculty Advisor:
Eligibility:
Individuals whose primary responsibility is teaching and who spend a portion of their time providing academic advising services to students.

Criteria:
The Award Selection Committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor or faculty advisor. Such evidence may include

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Appropriate referral activity
  • Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
  • Advisee or unit evaluations (summary data)
  • Caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty, and staff
  • Meeting advisees in informal settings
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
  • Mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Participation in and support of advisor development programs
  • Perception by colleagues of nominee's advising skills or advising administration skills.
  • Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising and/or administration

Individuals who may provide direct academic advising services to students but whose primary responsibility is as an administrator or director of an academic advising program.

Region 2 Excellence in Advising - Outstanding New Advisor:
Eligibility:
Individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students and who have served as an advisor for a period of three (3) or fewer years.

Criteria:
The Award Selection Committee will evaluate nominations on the evidence of qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor or faculty advisor. Such evidence may include

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Appropriate referral activity
  • Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
  • Advisee or unit evaluations (summary data)
  • Caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty, and staff
  • Meeting advisees in informal settings
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
  • Mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Participation in and support of advisor development programs
  • Perception by colleagues of nominee's advising skills or advising administration skills.
  • Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising and/or administration
  • Participation in and contribution to academic advising research and scholarship

Region 2 Excellence in Advising - Outstanding Advising Advocate:
Eligibility:
Any individual serving not directly involved with advising, but supports academic advising and is employed by a regionally acredited post-secondary institution may be nominated.

Submission Procedures:
Nominations must contain adequate factual or narrative material that describes the extent to which an individual meets the awards criteria. Include the following items listed below.

  1. Nomination Form: Please complete all sections of the Nomination Form. Incomplete Nomination Forms are viewed negatively by the Award Selection Committee.
  2. Nomination Letter: In this letter, the nominator should summarize the nominee's qualifications and why the person is being nominated for this award. The nominator should describe the nominee's job (very briefly) and give specific examples how this person has supported advising programs, advisers, and/or students and made an impact on academic advising. Quotes or comments from others (co-workers, supervisors, students, or other faculty/staff) may be included in this letter. This letter should be at least one page and be  a maximum of three pages. (Single spacing allowed, use an 11 point font or larger)
  3. Letters of support: From colleagues, staff and students, not to exceed three letters in any category (9 letters maximum)

Region 2 Excellence in Advising - Service to Region Two:
Eligibility:
Any individual who is a current member of Region Two of NACADA and must also have a history of involvement and membership in the region. Previous winners are not eligible. Current members of the Steering Committee are not eligible for consideration for this award. After the member's term is over s/he may then be eligible for consideration.

Submission Procedures:
Nominations must contain adequate factual or descriptive material for the Selection Committee to evaluate the nomination, including

  1. A completed Nomination Form
  2. Nomination Letter providing evidence that the candidate has made significant contributions to Region Two of the National Academic Advising Association, the profession of academic advising, leadership in the field of advising, as well as related professional areas, and a commitment to the importance of academic advising at a regional level.
  3. Nominee resume or vita
  4. Letters of support: From colleagues, staff and students, not to exceed three letters in any category (9 letters maximum)
  5. Additional materials that support the candidate's nomination.
