May 2009

The big news in MD is that we are planning the first MD State Drive-In in 7 years. It is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 29, 2009 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. I plan to have all details available and registration up and running by the Region II Conference in March.

The proposed theme is “Keeping Up with the Currents in Higher Education.” In the morning, Dr. Steve Robinson from UMBC will be speaking about FERPA in general, but also discussing recent changes to the policy that impact us as advisors. In the afternoon, I have a panel of 4 university and community college counselors from throughout the state who will be discussing various aspects of college student mental health. These are: 1) trends in depression on college campuses, 2) handling mental health issues at schools without in-house resources, 3) causes behind the tragedy at VA Tech, and 4) helping students with course or test anxieties.

If you are interested in assisting with the conference, please contact Karen Law at klewis@umbc.edu
