State
Reports
New
Jersey : Linda Bradbury, the new state rep for NJ, reported
that 140 people attended the June 7, 2007 Drive-In conference at
Rider University . Jane Oats was the keynote speaker and a panel
presentation on the changes in transfer policies statewide was a
highlight. The next drive-in will be May 8, 2008 at William Patterson
University .
Virginia
: Kim reported that there were not enough
registrations to hold the Drive-In in the state this year and that
Virginia State University in Richmond , VA is interested in hosting
a drive-in. This location is more central in the state and may attract
more people. Sandra Evans from VSU is interested in chairing the
event and the state’s coordinating committee will be involved. The
next VA State rep will be asked to work with Sandra to coordinate
this event.
DC
: The DC Drive-In had a great attendance. Kate Bruffet
is organizing a mini-Drive In December 12 for which 60 people have
registered. The event will be centered around the NACADA Webinar
on Technology, scheduled for that date. The next DC Drive-In is
set for Feb. 22 at George Washington University . Jenny Bloom, NACADA
President, will be the keynote speaker. Because the 22 nd is George
Washington’s birthday, the event will be centered around “presidents.”
PA-
East: Kristen reported that 125 people attended the drive-in
on Nov. 9 and they cleared $500. The give-aways were “green” and
everyone enjoyed the environmentally-friendly recycled bags. The
next drive-in is set for Nov. 7, 2008 at Leigh High Carbon University
. Susan Fread has agreed to host.
Maryland
: Karen reported that with Maryland hosted
the national conference, the volunteers from Region 2 were a great
help in making it a success. She also stated that the Picture with
the Pirate (Bill Elliott), raised about $800 for a Baltimore charity.
The next Maryland drive-in will be at UMBC, but a date has not been
selected.
Liaison
Reports
Membership :
The steering committee decided to use the Emerging Leaders Program
$1000 grant from national to promote student membership in the region.
The grant opportunity will be open for all students and will be combined
with the $700 already budgeted for students in the region awards program.
Funds will be used to pay for student membership, the region conference
registration, and can cover additional expenses up to the maximum
limit for each grant. This limit will be determined by the number
of accepted applications.
Awards:
Kathie reported that the student travel grant application
deadline is in February 2008 and that Janine will be the point of
contact for the applicants so that membership and conference fees
are paid first. Six nominees were submitted for the region awards
(a slight increase over last year). We are still going to push for
more nominees and try to streamline the application process by submitting
them on-line and without the nominee being involved in the process
so that it will be a surprise. With an on-line process, the award
deadline can be pushed to December 15. It was suggested that, to
get more members involved in the process, that the past award winners
can serve as reviewers for the next year. It was also recommended
that we change the Service to Region award so that members of the
steering committee can be nominated since we have not had a nominee
in that category for a number of years. This way the steering committee
can nominate someone. We added a new award to honor leaders on our
campuses who support and promote the mission of academic advising.
The Jeff Gardner Award is going to be processed through Linda Lantaff
this year, but in the future, the awards committee will coordinate
that process as well. It was also recommended that the awards remuneration
be increased to $400 from $200 (note: national approved $350 so
that the amount is not more than the national awards).
Member
Career Services: Kathie discussed offering a session at
the region conference directed toward explaining what services are
offered by Member Career Services and what members can do to help
their careers evolve. She also mentioned the NACADA Career Corner
and website.
Site
Selection : Mike visited Dover Downs for the 2009 Delaware
conference. Suggested dates are March 10-14. He will work with the
newly elected site selection liaison to finish the arrangements.
Future Regional Conferences are planned for: Atlantic City 2010,
Western VA 2011, MD 2012, Northern NJ 2013, Eastern PA 2014, Eastern
VA 2015.

of Hotel Facilities
The
Committee toured the facilities of the Sheraton Station Square .
Regional
Representative Report
The
national organization is soliciting members to step up to be mentors
for the Emerging Leaders Program. Seasoned advisors are asked to
submit information through the website.
We
are being reminded to keep our two strategic planning goals in mind
as we develop programs.
Discussion
about contacting institutions who do not have members in our region
resulted in asking the national office if we can circulate the membership
list to the state reps for review.
It
was decided that we will host a reception for region 2 members immediately
following the region meeting at the national conference in Chicago
. Sandy will make the arrangements for the reception.
Budget
Review
We
drafted the budget for the 2008 year. The major adjustment was to
increase the award amounts to $400 and to add funding for a new
award to recognize those at our institutions who support academic
advising but may not be members of NACADA. The purpose is to encourage
leaders at our institutions to attend a regional conference. We
also set aside $1000 for the regional reception to be held at the
national conference.
