NACADA Region 5 Award & Scholarship Information
Each award and scholarship have specific criteria and application processes. The awards and scholarships available for 2012 are:
- Region 5 Individual Scholarship - This scholarship is intended to support an individual (professional, faculty, or peer) who is engaging, or seeking to engage, in activities intended to further one's role, function or responsibility within the field of Academic Advising.
- Region 5 Professional Development Grant- To support advisor training and professional development efforts (professional, faculty, or peer), provided by an allied or non-allied advising organization.
- Great Lakes~Great Leaders - Emerging Leader: This competitive program will identify members of Region V and pair them with experienced mentors from the region in an effort to develop leadership skill sin members from underrepresented populations who wish to enhance their involvement in NACADA.
- Great Lakes~Great Leaders - Mentor: Each year the Region V Steering Committee will identify up to two leaders and two mentors to be paired for one year (could be two) to identify goals for leadership development. Mentors will assist emerging leaders in developing action plans to accomplish these goals.
We are pleased to offer these awards & scholarships to our Region 5 Members. Detailed information on the Region 5 Conference is available at www.nacada.ksu.edu.
The criteria and applications for these awards and grants are below as is the link to the on-line submission portal.
Instructions for On-Line Submission:
- Enter a password - this can be simple and you can use the same one for other submissions
- Select your Region.
- Then select the award for which you are applying from the "Awards/Scholarship Category" drop down box.
- Be sure to write down your Award/Scholarship Nomination Number and your password, so if you have to stop and come back to the nomination form, you can do so easily! It will also be in your confirmation e-mail.
- Enter the information as it is requested. NOTE: The NOTIFICATION section is for you to list those people who you would want to know if you are selected for this award/scholarship. We would suggest your president/provost, your supervisors, your public relations department.

Region 5 Grants
Region 5 Individual Scholarship
Eligibility:
The purpose of the scholarship is intended to support an individual (professional, faculty, or peer) who is engaging, or seeking to engage, in activities intended to further one's role, function or responsibility within the field of Academic Advising. Examples include costs related to graduate coursework, attendance at training institutes or leadership seminars. It is NOT recommended that proposals be submitted for professional development in the form of regional or annual conference attendance. The NACADA Great Lakes Region V steering committee may grant up to $500.00 for this award.
Submission Procedures:
In order to apply for this award, the individual must include all of the following items in the grant proposal to be given full consideration:
- Provide a description of the academic training/course/program for which this scholarship will be used.
- Provide a description of the personal academic plan or intent for this activity.
- Provide a list of budget/costs as well as other sources of financial support for this endeavor.
- Provide a description of how the activity (academic training/course/program) relates to academic advising and how this will benefit you (the individual), your department, and the students with whom you work.
- List other professional activities you have completed in the last two years.
- Provide a timeline for completion of the proposed activity.
- Applicant MUST be a member in good standing of NACADA and Great Lakes Region V.

Region 5 Professional Development Grant
Eligibility:
The purpose of this grant is to support advisor training and professional development efforts (professional, faculty, or peer), the NACADA Great Lakes Region V steering committee will grant up to $500.00 to any allied or non-allied advising organizations for this designated purpose. Proposals must include plans for promoting National Academic Advising Association resources, membership and NACADA related events.
Submission Procedures:
In order to apply for this award, the advising organization/individual must include all of the following items in the grant proposal to be given full consideration:
- Brief Description of the program (training, etc.) Include statement on how this
activity relates to advising and the benefits to participants.
- Provide a list of NACADA related resources that will be used.
- Provide a list of the professionals (with at least one person being a NACADA
member) taking responsibility for planning, conducting, evaluating, and
providing a report back to the Region V steering committee.
- If training, provide a description of the type and number of invited advisors
(i.e. fulltime, faculty etc.) for this event.
- If training, provide an agenda of the training or professional development
activities for which the funds are being requested.
- If on-line materials/activities/training are being developed, provide a list of
these and the conceptual model being used.
- Provide a timeline for the project.
- Provide a detailed budget and list other sources of financial support.

Region 5 Institutional Allied Organization Grant
Eligibility:
In order to promote the continued development of allied institutional advising
organizations in the NACADA Great Lakes Region, the Region V Steering Committee
may grant up to $500.00 to any group of 10 or more advisors from an individual
institution towards the creation of such an organization. Advisors employed at
institutions that already have an allied institutional advising organization may not
use this grant to begin a new organization.
Submission Procedures:
In order to apply for this award, the groups must include all of the following items in the
grant proposal to be given full consideration.
- Have an official name for the allied organization.
- Provide a list of advisors and e-mail addresses and identify those that are
NACADA members who are taking responsibility for planning, conducting,
evaluating, and providing a report back to the Region V steering committee.
(The group MUST include at least one person who is a member in good
standing of NACADA and Great Lakes Region V)
- Provide a draft copy of the organization’s governance structure or bylaws.
- Provide a draft copy of the organizational plan to hold a one-day advising
conference within the next two years.
- Satisfy the requirements for Allied organizational status set forth by
NACADA http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Membership/allied.htm and provide a
copy of the allied membership form submitted to NACADA.
- Briefly write a one to two page statement addressing for what and how the
requested funds will be used. Note organizational plans for growing and
sustaining the organization.

Region 5 State/Province Allied Organization Grant
Eligibility:
In order to promote the continued development of allied state and provincial advising
organizations within the Great Lakes Region, the Region V Steering Committee may
grant up to $500.00 to a group of 35 or more advisors, from at least 4 institutions, within
a particular state or province towards the creation of such an organization. Advisors
residing in states and provinces with existing allied organizations working with NACADA
may not apply for this grant.
Submission Procedures:
In order to apply for this award, the groups must include all of the following items in the
grant proposal to be given full consideration.
- Have an official name for the allied organization
- Provide a list of the advisors, the institutions where they work, and their email addresses and identify those that are NACADA members (the group
MUST include at least one person who is a member in good standing of
NACADA and Great Lakes Region V).
- Provide a draft copy of the organization’s governance structure or bylaws
(or proposed structure/bylaws)
- Provide a draft copy of the organizational plan to hold a one-day state or
province advising conference within the next two years
- Satisfy the requirements for Allied organizational status set forth by
NACADA http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Membership/allied.htm and provide a
copy of the allied membership form submitted to NACADA.
- Briefly write a one to two page statement addressing for what and how the

Great Lakes ~ Great Leaders
Great Lakes~Great Leaders - Emerging Leader
Eligibility:
In order to support the development of diverse leadership to serve NACADA at the regional and national/international
level the Region V Steering Committee would like to announce the establishment of a new program, Great Lakes ~ Great
Leaders. This competitive program will identify members of Region V and pair them with experienced mentors from the
region in an effort to develop leadership skills in members from underrepresented populations who wish to enhance
their involvement in NACADA. Underrepresented populations include but are not limited to ethnicity, gender, gender
identity, disabilities, sexual orientation, institutional type, size and employment position.
Each year the Region V Steering Committee will identify up to two leaders and two mentors to be paired for two years to
identify goals for leadership development. Mentors will assist leaders in developing action plans to accomplish these
goals. The applicant will receive up to $500 in the first year, and $250 in the second year to assist with travel costs to
state, regional and annual conferences.
Requirements for the Great Lakes ~ Great Leaders Emerging Leader applicants:
- Must be a member of NACADA at the time of application and maintain that membership throughout the
program.
- Must be interested in becoming involved in leadership positions at the state, regional and/or
national/international level.
- Must be able to attend the regional conference and participate in activities established for the Great Lakes ~
Great Leaders program participants, including the NACADA leadership pre-conference program held at the
regional conference. Attendance at the Annual NACADA Conference is encouraged but not required.
- Must attend, as observers, the Steering Committee Meetings at all conferences they attend.
- Must be willing to commit to a two-yearlong program and be willing to communicate with their mentor on a
regular basis.
- Must develop, with mentor consultation, a written plan for leadership development.
- Must agree to a mid-year and annual progress report.
- Must submit a written report at the end of the program documenting the experience and complete an
evaluation of the program.
Applications will be made available May 15th
and are due no later than July 15th
of each year.
Awards will be made in early August.

evaluation of the program.
