Region 8 Annual Awards Information and Instructions
Application/Nomination
Form - Due January 27, 2012
The
annual deadline for Region 8 awards materials, unless otherwise
noted, is January 27, 2012. Please email the nomination form and all other supporting materials (in either Word or PDF file formats) to the Region 8 Award Committee Chair: Jeff Malone at Jeff.Malone@oregonstate.edu
The
Region 8 Steering Committee is pleased to announce the creation
of an annual awards program to recognize excellence in advising
and advising administration at post-secondary institutions in the
Northwest. We are accepting nominations of qualified individuals
in the following categories:
New Advisor Award – New faculty or professional
advisors (three or fewer years) who, early in their careers, have
demonstrated qualities associated with excellence in academic
advising.
Academic Advising Award – Experienced faculty
or professional advisors who have a demonstrated record of excellence
in academic advising.
Advising Administrator Award – Individuals who
have exhibited excellence in their primary role as an administrator
or director of an academic advising program.
Institutional Administrator Award – Individuals
at the upper level of institutional administration (Presidents,
Provosts, Vice Provosts, etc.) who have a demonstrated commitment
to advising and advisors on their campuses.
Award
winners and certificate of merit winners
will be given in each category, and all will be recognized at the
2010 Regional Conference. Award winners in each
category will receive a 1 year complementary membership to NACADA.
Eligibility
- Nominees must come from accredited post-secondary
institutions in Region 8 ( Alaska , Alberta , British Columbia
, Idaho , Montana , Oregon , Washington, and the Yukon Territory
). Current NACADA membership is not required.
- Advising Administrators must have served
in an administrative capacity for at least three years.
- Current members of the Region 8 steering
committee are not eligible for Region 8 awards. After the member’s
term of office is over, he or she may then be eligible for consideration.
Criteria
(New Advisor, Academic Advising, and Advising Administrator Awards)
Nomination
packets will be evaluated for evidence of qualities and practices
that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor
or administrator. In accordance with the criteria by NACADA awards
given at the National level, this evidence may include:
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to engage in, promote, and support developmental advising
Availability to advisees, faculty, or staff
Frequency of contact with advisees
Appropriate referral activity
Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
Data demonstrating success in meeting advising goals and outcomes
(by advisor or department)
Caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty and staff
Meeting advisees in informal settings
Participation and support of intrusive advising to build strong
relationships with advisees
Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
Mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures
Implementation of programmatic policies and procedures that support
NACADA Core Values and that reflect the standards of good practice
in the CAS Standards and Guidelines for Academic Advising
Participation in and/or support of professional development programs
for advisors
Perception by colleagues and/or advisees of nominee’s advising
or advising administration skills
Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising
or advising administration
Criteria
(Institutional Administrator)
Nomination
packets will be evaluated for evidence of qualities and practices
that distinguish the nominee as strong supporter of academic advising
and as a leader who has worked to promote and advance quality academic
advising on his or her campus. Evidence may include:
Advocacy for advisors and advising issues on his/her respective
campuses
Support for advisor recognition and development
Demonstrated commitment to the core values to define quality academic
advising
Action that support advising as an integral component to student
learning
Submission
Procedures
Nominations
must contain adequate narrative material that describes the extent
to which an individual meets the awards criteria. Objective data
that supports the awards criteria is encouraged. Nomination packets
for any of the awards should include:
- Nomination Form –
Please select the appropriate award category and complete all
sections of the form.
- Nomination Letter –
In this letter, the nominator should summarize the nominee’s qualifications
and why the individual is being nominate for the award. It is
not necessary to address all of criteria listed above, but rather
this document should provide the evidence and specific examples
that demonstrate the nominee’s outstanding performance. Nominators
should solicit input from other as they craft their nomination
letters and are most welcome to include quotes or comments from
colleagues and students. Single spacing is acceptable, but the
nomination letter should not exceed three pages.
- Letters of Support
– The nomination packet can also include up to two additional
letters of support. These letters may come from colleagues, employees,
supervisors, or students – anyone who might augment the selection
committee’s understanding of the nominee. Letters should not exceed
two pages single spaced.
- Additionally, nominees for the
New Advisor, Academic Advising, and Academic Advising Administrator
Awards , should submit a personal philosophy
statement regarding their approach to advising and/or
advising administration. This document should not exceed two pages
single spaced.
