SUB-UNIT GOALS:
-
To enrich the regional
NACADA member experience by providing outreach opportunities,
membership opportunities and information, timely and consistent
communication throughout the region, and encouraging involvement
in NACADA.
Objectives to address Goals:
- Continue to work collaboratively with other professional organizations
and/or conferences enhancing common goals, networking, and membership
involvement.
- Revise Advisory Council for region that includes at least one
representative from Nevada, California, and Hawaii, one representative
from large private, large public, small private, small public,
and two-year institution. For purposes of continuity and institutional
memory, past region chair, current chairs of interest groups and
commissions (from within region) will also be members of the new
advisory council. Current chair will preside over the advisory
council.
- Continue to communicate with our membership via PACNET, and
mailings to new members.
- Work with the National NACADA office to have the Region 9 website
organized and hosted by the NACADA Executive Office.
- Continue to promote membership in NACADA and participation
in local drive-in, regional, and national conferences.
- Provide information regarding Region 9 to Academic Advising
News.
- Represent Region 9 concerns and interests to the Board.
Actions taken towards Objectives:
- Region 9 and Region 8 will co-host a regional conference on
April 30-May 2, 2003 in Vancouver British Columbia as part of
this joint initiative.
- Send out electronic invitation to all specified to formally
join the new advisory council.
- Continue with the production of Pacific Currents, a bi-annual
Region 9 bulletin to be sent to all Region 9 members where announcements,
job opportunities, ideas, etc. can be shared. Continue communications
via PACNET and personalized email to the membership.
- Appoint a new region webmaster to get the Region 9 Website
hosted on the NACADA central space to avoid depending on specific
institutions’ technical team. Already emailed entire membership
about important upcoming events via personalized email.
- Mention NACADA activities in efforts to spread the word and
get others involved.
- Stay on top of deadlines for each submission
- Host Region 9 Board meetings to brainstorm ideas and to provide
a forum where issues can be heard and tasks and benchmarking can
be proposed. Use our PACNET list serve for discussion on topics
and solicit opinions via direct email
Strategies for addressing Strategic
Plan:
- To influence Deans and Vice Chancellors at University of Southern
California to support the values of quality academic advising
through professional development and encourage the utilization
of resources that NACADA provides.
- Have a standing dialogue with the Council of Academic Advisors
(CAA), USC’s internal organization of advisors about professional
development opportunities provided by NACADA.
- Continue to assess the effectiveness of the soon to be formed
advisory council’s organizational structure and determine
if current structure promotes maximum inclusion and individual
growth opportunities.
- Embrace new technologies that enhance academic advising at this
year’s Regional Conference.
- Bring to the surface issues that deal with stress-reduction
and wellness for the advising community, which works under tremendous
pressures.
- Cultivate new membership opportunities.
Actions Taken on Strategies:
- Met with senior administrators at the University of Southern
California to talk about NACADA and ask them to talk to individual
departments about making available to their advisors professional
development opportunities such as providing financial support
to go to NACADA regional and/or national conferences. Got positive
feedback but budget cuts are a definite challenge.
- Met with the Council of Academic Advisor’s steering committee
to co-sponsor a conference on advising for advisors from the local
area tentatively in May.
- Continue to work on Geographic representation in the Region.
I am on the national board on the issue of geographic boundaries.
This is somewhat of a challenge given the sheer size of Region
9 and the distances between areas where advisors are concentrated.
- The regional conference addresses our changing technology needs.
I will continue to talk about why advisors need to shed technophobia
and embrace some technology in order to be effective advisors.
- Some of the special topics at this year’s regional conference
deal with “gardening” and “cultivation”.
The strength of the theme lies in the symbiotic relationship between
students and advisors. At the regional conference speak with counselors
from community colleges to see if we can find a happy medium between
“counselors” and “advisors” so we organize
at least some local workshops jointly to gain members from community
college population.
