Questions to Ask

Before the Interview, ask yourself:

  • Have I found out everything I can about the institution / department / office / people I am interviewing with?
  • Can I relate a situation(s) from previous experiences to skills they are looking for?
  • If I am selected, what do I hope to gain from this internship?
  • How does this position relate to what I want in a future career?
  • What can I bring to help the institution meet their goals, both in the department and as a whole?

During the Interview, you may want to ask:

  • What type of training will I receive? 
  • What kind of projects will I be expected to work on?
  • What types of challenges might I encounter in this internship?
  • If this the first time you are offering an internship, or have you had previous interns?
  • What are some of the qualities that you have seen as valuable in previous interns?
  • If I am selected, what will I need to accomplish to receive an outstanding review?
  • How would you describe the institution / department / office culture?
  • What is your favorite part about your job / institution / town?

After the Interview, ask yourself:

  • Is this a environment I will feel comfortable in?
  • How will this internship advance my short- and/or long-term goals?
  • Is this position still something I want to pursue?
