Historically, academic advising has moved from a clerical activity to a student-centered activity to the present recognition of academic advising as an integral learning experience of the college community and culture. However, until college campuses move away from only program or delivery outcomes that primarily focus on the behaviors of those planning and delivering the advising experiences and begin to carefully develop, teach and measure student learning outcomes for academic advising, advising will continue to be on the "edge" of the learning mission of the college campus.

In this Webinar broadcast, Tomarra Adams provided a foundation for the development of student learning outcomes as well as hands-on strategies for teaching these outcomes, activities and experiences for students, and strategies for measuring the outcomes.

Participants were shown:

- how student learning outcomes must clearly relate to the institutional or unit's advising mission.

    - how to develop student learning outcomes that express what students should know, do and appreciate.

- how to develop instructional strategies and experiences for students.

- strategies for measuring the student achievement of the learning outcomes.

What did Participants learn? Here is a sampling of the Participant Responses to the Webinar Evaluation Question: What was the most helpful information you learned during this Webinar?

  • Learning outcomes is the way of the future and will be guiding our work. It is part of a change process, which is what our staff experienced as well. It is a challenge for some to even consider developing learning outcomes.
  • We learned how important it is to have the learning outcomes clearly in mind before any measurement of effective learning can take place.
  • That there are many useful ways to write learning outcomes and that they need to be linked to teaching strategies.
  • Importance of assessing both the advisor and student outcomes and tools for assessment. Good to hear that other institutions are engaged in the process.
  • We found areas in which we could find evidence of student outcomes and helpful methods of documentation.
  • Our unit has been going through the NACADA Flowchart of Assessment in Academic Advising. The examples given helped define and afirm some of the things we have been discussing as part of this assessment.
  • Excellent overview of process, handouts very helpful, good examples from different institutions.
  • That other colleges were in the same position we are. We were in the majority for both voting opportunities. Also, it reconfirmed our Advising Team's inclination to start small instead of trying to institutionalize right away.
  • Tying it all together - connecting the mission to the outcomes and seeing how that can be done
  • The concept of applying student learning outcomes to the advising process, and the examples of other institutions' student learning outcomes.
  • Examples of what other schools are doing and very specific questions provided to help develop student learning outcomes.
  • The encouragement to use our Teaching and Learning Center for increased work with advising as teaching on our campus.
