How do you relate with parents on your campus?  Advising personnel at the University of Oklahoma's University College decided to modify their interactions with parents not only to develop appropriate involvement at the collegiate level but to acknowledge parental importance in the lives of their students.  Because of these modifications, there has been a positive difference in the overall contact after student entry into the institution. 

 

In this Webinar broadcast, 2008 Best of Region 7 Conference Presentation winner Brian Nossaman will discuss the current practices and effective techniques used to teach the new college parent and student about their changing roles.  By setting the stage of education, vocabulary and dialogue, both parents and students can make the successful transition within the appropriate boundaries.  This information can be applied to any advisor at any institution.

Brian Nossaman

Senior Academic Counselor

Brian Nossaman has been a Senior Academic Counselor at the University of Oklahoma for over twelve years.  Within University College (a Freshman Advising College), he advises all degree plans and every major for the first year of study, including Undecided and Pre-Health majors.  In addition to this first-year student population, Brian also has experience working with parents of these particular students. Along with his professional position, he has instructed a Freshman Year Experience course for the past twelve years and enjoys presenting at state, regional, and national conferences.  He also specializes in advising students in the Fine Arts and maintains mentoring relationships with them throughout their college career.  Brian completed his Bachelor’s in Music Education and Master’s in Choral Conducting, both at OU.
