As institutions today focus on programs that support and enhance the academic success and persistence to graduation of their students, it becomes even more imperative that we evaluate and assess our academic advising programs in order to ensure that students are receiving the highest quality academic advising learning experiences possible. Conducting a self-study or self-assessment of your program and making revisions or changes in your processes, procedures, professional development, and student experiences is essential, especially in this time of financial crisis on campuses as we must clearly be able to demonstrate the quality of our work with students.

 

The National Academic Advising Association Board of Directors endorses three documents that champion the educational role of academic advising in a diverse world and should be used by campuses to conduct their own self-study of their programs. The three documents are:

This Webinar will provide an overview of these documents and key strategies and practical suggestions for utilizing them to make significant changes in your programs as well as to assess the overall effectiveness of the academic advising experiences on your campus.

Participants will:

  • understand the components of the CAS Standards and Guidelines for Academic Advising and learn the basic approach to using the Standards and Guidelines in the Self Assessment Process promoted by CAS,
  • understand the place of the NACADA Core Values in an advising professional development,
  • understand how to disseminate the NACADA Concept of Academic Advising as the foundation for the academic advising profession, and
  • gain strategies to utilizing these documents to conduct a self-study on your campus.

Eric White, Executive Director-Undergraduate Studies, Pennsylvania State University

Eric White earned his undergraduate degree in history from Rutgers University and his masters and doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.  He joined The Pennsylvania State University in l970 as a psychological counselor at the Delaware County Campus (now Brandywine). Moving to University Park in l975 as Coordinator of the Freshman Testing, Counseling and Advising Program, he was named Director of the Division of Undergraduate Studies in l986 and Executive Director in l999. He was also named Associate Dean for Advising in 2006.  Eric is an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Education at Penn State, author of monograph chapters, journal articles, and co-editor of “Teaching Through Advising: A Faculty Perspective” (1995), a monograph of the Jossey-Bass New Directions for Teaching and Learning Series, “Teaching from Mentoring” (2001), another Jossey-Bass New Directions monograph, and “Academic Advising: New Insights for Teaching and Learning in the First Year.”

Active in NACADA, Eric has served as the multiversity representative, chair of the Placement Committee and the Commission on Standards and Ethics in Advising, treasurer, and as a member of the Board of Directors from 2002 to 2005. He was president of NACADA in 2004-2005 and of the Association of Deans and Directors of University Colleges and Undergraduate Studies in l993.He has also written a chapter for the NACADA/Jossey-Bass publication Academic Advising: A Comprehensive Handbook and co-authored a chapter on technology in Faculty Advising Examined. He is the 2002 recipient of NACADA’s Virginia N. Gordon Award for Excellence in the Field of Advising and Penn State’s Administrative Excellence Award in 2005.

Charlie Nutt, NACADA Executive Director

 

Charlie Nutt, a NACADA member since 1991, joined Kansas State University and the NACADA Executive Office in 2002 as Associate Director and Assistant Professor in the College of Education.

Charlie earned his Associate Degree in English from Coastal Georgia Community College (formerly Brunswick College), Bachelors in English Education from the University of Georgia, Masters in Administration and Supervision from Georgia Southern University, and Doctorate in Educational Leadership in Higher Education from Georgia Southern University.   He has taught both at the secondary and post-secondary levels since 1977. He taught English in grades 9-12 as well as at the community college. At Coastal Georgia Community College, he was Assistant Professor of English before being appointed Director of Orientation and Advising. He next served as Vice President for Student Development Services from 1993 until he moved to the NACADA Executive Office.

Charlie served in various leadership roles in the Association before coming to work full-time for Executive Office. These roles include Region IV Representative, Two-Year College Commission Chair, 2000 National Conference Chair, Chair of Re-organization Implementation Committee, Chair of Task Force on Faculty Advising, and President-Elect. In addition, he has served on the faculty of the NACADA Summer Institute, Academic Advising Administrators' Institute, and Assessment of Advising Institute. As Executive Director of NACADA, Charlie is responsible for coordinating the work of the Executive Office staff as well as working with the various NACADA units on professional development issues and external relations for the Association.
