Advisor Training and Development Commission News and Updates

Note: The following e-mail was sent to commission members on January 28, 2005.

To: Advisor Training and Development Commission Members
From: Cole Holmes, Commission Chair
Date: January 28, 2005

Dear Advisor Training and Development Commission Members:

Happy New Year and welcome to 2005! In the months to come, many of us will be preparing for regional and state conferences, writing nomination letters for advising, program and service awards, planning for the summer institute, and gearing up for the trip to Las Vegas for the 2005 National Conference. (Of course, we’ll also be involved in advising our new and continuing students, preparing for commencement, and planning for new student orientation!) Indeed, busy, busy months lie ahead.

This purpose of this letter is to inform you of the many ongoing activities related to our Advisor Training and Development Commission. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read through this message and look for opportunities for involvement in the commission. As the commission with one of the largest membership rosters, our strength in numbers translates to a wealth of experience and information to be shared with one another. I wholeheartedly encourage you to seek ways to contribute your knowledge and expertise to our commission efforts.

2005 National Conference Planning
The 2004 National Conference in Cincinnati was a tremendous success and the planning process for the 2005 conference is already in full swing. If you haven’t yet had an opportunity to submit a session proposal you still have time. The deadline for proposals is February 8 and they may be submitted online at www.nacada.ksu.edu/NationalConf/2005/index.htm. Our commission members have typically submitted more proposals than any other commission, so I encourage you to continue the tradition! Six of our members have graciously volunteered to read and recommend proposals for selection by the conference chairs-- I’m sure we will have our work cut out for us. (Thanks Beth Isbell Tapley, Gail Stubbs, Kathy Davis, Sue Traynor, Kathy Davis, Sharon Melone-Orme and Megan Warner for volunteering your time and energy to this important process). Mark your calendars for February 8 and submit those stellar proposals as soon as possible!

2005 Service to Commission Award Nomination and Selection
Within the next few weeks, Heidi Koring of Lynchburg College and Cheryl Sullivan of Oakland University will be contacting commission members to solicit nominations for a Service to Commission Award, which will be presented at the national conference in Las Vegas. Guidelines for nominations and selection and a timeline for the process will be forwarded to Advisor Training and Development Commission members in the hopes that we can recognize one of our many active and committed members. Nominations are due April 1 via e-mail to the Executive Office. Please begin thinking about possible nominees for this honor. More information on these awards can be found at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Awards/CService.htm.

2004 Post Conference Report
At the conclusion of every national conference, each commission chair is responsible for providing members with a summary of the activities, goals, and leadership opportunities of the commission. A post-conference report has been submitted to NACADA and will be available online soon at www.nacada.ksu.edu/CandIGDivision/CIGDReports.htm, and will also be posted to our commission web page at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Commissions/C17/index.htm under “News and Updates”. Once this report is posted, I hope you’ll visit the site and familiarize yourself with the ongoing efforts and activities of our commission.

Advisor Training and Development Resources
A list of many helpful resources is available on our commission site on the “Resources” page at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Commissions/C17/index.htm. If you would like to add a resource that you have found particularly informative or helpful, please send it to me via e-mail at cole.holmes@mccombs.utexas.edu and I’ll make sure it is added to the list. In addition, check out the monographs and other publications available from NACADA at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Monographs/index.htm. A wealth of information is available for your professional development!

NACADA Elections
Cast your vote now for officers for 2005 and beyond! Included on the list of nominees are those seeking the leadership role for our commission! If you haven’t already voted, please do so on the NACADA web site at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Election/OnlineElectionProcedures.htm by the February 11 voting deadline.

‘Ask a Colleague’ Initiative
NEW! Share your knowledge and expertise with your colleagues through the Advisor Training and Development ‘Ask a Colleague’ Initiative! During our annual commission meeting, one of our members shared a terrific idea (I apologize for failing to write down the name of the person who came up with this brilliant idea. ? ) Have you ever wished you could talk to a NACADA colleague whose experience in a particular training and development issue or initiative mirrored an experience you were facing? Have you ever thought, “I wish I could help a colleague by sharing my experience with a particular transition or training-related issue”? WISH NO MORE, my friends! The ‘Ask a Colleague’ initiative now available to members of the Advisor Training and Development Commission will soon be launched on our commission web site.

At the suggestion and recommendation of commission members who attended our annual meeting in Cincinnati, we will now have a section on our site where members may: 1) post a brief bio highlighting areas of expertise and experience you are willing to share with others, and 2) read bios of commission members in the hopes of contacting a colleague who may have experience in an area in which you may need some helpful advice. Here’s how it will work:

  1. Commission members will submit a brief bio to me cole.holmes@mccombs.utexas.edu). I will compile the information and forward it to the NACADA office, where it will be posted on our commission "Resources" web page under the link titled ‘Ask a Colleague.’
  2. Once posted, other members can read the bios and search for others whose areas of particular interest or expertise match theirs. For example, if I were a new supervisor responsible for developing a training module for student peer advisors, I could peruse the bios and search for a member who had experience in this area. I could then contact the member profiled and seek her advice, ask her questions about how she developed her plan, and learn about the frustrations or joys she faced in the process.

Below is an example of a bio that will be posted to the ‘Ask a Colleague’ page (yep, I’m the guinea pig!)

Name: Cole Holmes
Institution: McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin
Education: BS in Education, UT-Austin, 1984; MA, St. Edward’s University, 1992, EdD in Educational Administration, UT-Austin, 2004.

Current job: Director of Advising (7 years)
Experience: I currently supervise a staff of 10 professional advisors. We work with undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor’s degrees in business administration. Recently, we revamped our advising delivery services, transitioning from a Total Intake Model to a Self-Contained Model. As such, all students are assigned to an academic advisor upon arriving on our campus and continue to work with that advisor until graduation. Our transition occurred much more smoothly than we anticipated and we are seeing positive results from the continual, ongoing contact with assigned student cohorts.
Additional insight: I’ve experienced seven years in a supervisory role and, though challenging at times, I’ve learned a great deal about staff motivation and morale. In addition, I recently completed my doctorate (working full time throughout the process) so I am certainly willing to share (commiserate?) with those in a similar situation.

PLEASE NOTE: This initiative differs from the NACADA Member Expertise Database. Our initiative is intended to provide opportunities for you to network with one another, share ideas, and seek advice in an informal manner.

So, please, if you’re willing to share your thoughts and ideas with others, get involved! Send me your bio today!

Have a wonderful spring semester and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions about our commission or NACADA in general. And, again, don’t forget to vote in the NACADA elections and don’t fail to submit your 2005 national conference session proposals by February 8th!

Sincerely,

Cole Holmes, EdD
