Goals and Objectives


Current Commission Goals and Activities:

Commission Goals and Objectives for 2004-2005 (as related to NACADA Strategic Plan missions):

Mission 1 : Address the academic advising needs of higher education.

Strategies:

1-B -- Collect information about the environments in which academic advising operates. Through surveys, focus groups or other means, determine how academic advising best operates in higher education and determine if success is determined by particular variables - delivery model by institutional type, intrusiveness, processes for specific populations, etc.

Form " Ask A Colleague" resource group among Advisor Training and Development commission members. Post brief bios of members willing to act as a resource to other commission members in areas of training and development expertise. 1-D -- Provide comprehensive professional development opportunities to the academic advising community. Identify, develop, and deliver professional development activities and resources to meet the needs of the academic advising community - including institutions, central administrators, full-time advisors, faculty advisors, and peer advisors.

Mission 2 : Advance the body of knowledge of academic advising.

Strategies:

2-A -- Promote, support, and conduct research related to the enhancement of academic advising through further understanding of the student, the campus environment, advising processes, or other related areas.

Mission 5 : Promote the involvement of diverse populations in the Association.

Strategies:

5-A -- Assess member needs and talents. Identify representatives of diverse groups and plan for ensuring their successful involvement in association activities.

Commission Goals and Objectives for 2003-2004:

  1. Recruit and involve members in commission sub-committees:
         a.  National Conference workshop steering committee
         b.  Commission fair planning committee
         c.  Service to Commission committee
         d.  Web page development and maintenance committee
  2. Assist in development of advisor training video and other NACADA publications.
  3. Increase visibility of training and development commission and opportunities for members to share best practices.

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Recruit members to participate in session selection for 2004 conference.
  2. Establish clear criteria for selection and commission sponsorship.
  3. Solicit volunteers for commission fair committee.
  4. Request funds for commission fair from NACADA.
  5. Recruit committee members to investigate Service to Commission nomination process, solicit possible nominees, and, if applicable, nominate member for award.
  6. Contact members who expressed an interest in maintaining commission web page.
  7. Review current content, submit new material and maintain site.
  8. Actively encourage idea sharing on commission list serve.
