Platform
Statement:
I have been a member
of the Two-Year Colleges Commission five years. I have benefited
from active participation in the two-year colleges list serve,
writing for the NACADA Journal and being editor of the
Two-Year College Newsletter. I made a career transition
to academic counseling from personal counseling and have found
that academic advisors/counselors in two-year colleges have a
different mission than our university counterparts. Our challenges
are different if not more difficult. We serve students from diverse
academic, emotional, personal, and cultural backgrounds. As advisors
and counselors we attempt to address any issue that may impede
students' academic progress. Along with tremendous confidence,
we also see anxiety and self-doubt. It is academic advisors and
counselors, both professional advisors and faculty advisors, who
have the most impact on students' ability to clarify their goals
and overcome their individual, unique
obstacles.
If
selected to serve as Two-Year Colleges Commission Chair, my goals
