Statement:
-
Highlight your involvement in this unit that will help you in
leading this unit. What roles have you played in this unit thus
far?
Over
the last five years I have attended four regional conferences,
in two regions, five statewide advising conferences and the last
national conference in 2005. I have presented at five of these
conferences. In 2002 I was on the planning committee for the Colorado/Wyoming
Academic Advising Conference. This was a very small committee
so all of us had a significant role. I was in charge of advertising
the conference. In 2004/2005 I was part of the Region X Conference
Planning Committee. I was the Program Chair. My duties as Program
Chair included the Call for Proposals, reviewing all proposal
submissions in conjunction with the Committee Chair and proposal
readers, maintaining correspondence with presenters, creating
and maintaining the database for the conference schedule planning,
and designing and printing the conference program. Since a major
role of the Regional Chair is to assist in the planning of future
regional conferences, I believe my planning committee activities
have given me a strong preparation for the Region Chair position.
-
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit
and the Association?
My
goals as Region X Chair are:
- Increase institutional administrators'
knowledge and acceptance of the graduate certificate in advising
offered by NACADA. I would also like to increase the number
of Region X members participating in the certificate program
by providing assistance to members where needed.
- Increase Region X membership,
by promoting NACADA and recruiting across all levels of advising
(staff, faculty, professional and administrators).
- Increase regional recognition
& involvement at the national level by continuing to acknowledge
and honor our members for outstanding service and achievements
in advising.
- Why
are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what
influenced you to run for this leadership position?
A
colleague introduced me to NACADA nearly 5 years ago. Over the
years I have become more & more involved in NACADA because
the benefits, both personal & professional, have been exceptional.
The resources available to advisors through NACADA are much greater
than most advisors are aware of. I would like to change this.
This last year serving as Program Chair for the regional conference
held in Denver gave me the privilege of working with so many of
you across our region. We truly have an amazing, inspiring group
of professionals here in the Rocky Mountain region.
-
Provide any additional comments or information regarding your
past experiences and qualifications that relate to your candidacy
for this leadership position.
I
started advising students 10 years ago as a transfer evaluator
at a state college. This urban teaching institution serves non-traditional
students and has a 23% minority enrollment. Six years ago I moved
to a professional advising position at a tier one research university.
My current institution has a mix of staff, faculty & professional
exempt advisors. As a front line advisor with my broad institutional
background, I believe I am uniquely equipped to understand the
variety of issues facing advisors all across our region. I would
be honored to represent you.
