Platform Statement:

  • Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will help you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?

My interest in advisor training and development has grown over the years and is now my full-time employment focus. In the past, I have followed the issues and ideas presented via the commission distribution list and have attended the commission meetings at conferences.

  • What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association?

One of my goals is to increase the level of recognition that advisor training and development plays a major role in the retention and persistence of students.

Additionally, I want to encourage increased collaboration between and among institutions on the examples of best practices, increase participation of peer advisors and graduate interns in training opportunities, and encourage an increase in information sharing related to campus events, advisor newsletters, conference presentations, web pages, and online discussions of issues.

  • Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

I was influenced to run for this position out of a desire to share what I know and to learn from others. I'm in a position at ASU where what I learn from NACADA commission members can influence the effectiveness of advisor training at the largest single-campus institution in the USA. I want to bring advisor training and professional development to the forefront of the Retention "bandwagon".

Additionally, I have strong support from my colleagues and administration to serve in this capacity.

  • Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.

The breadth and depth of my advising experience at Arizona State University and my position as director of advising training and professional development have provided me with the background for serving as Chair of this Commission. I have developed advising training sessions for all levels of experience, a recognition and reward program that is tied to professional development, and have a syllabus for a graduate level course at ASU in academic advising pending approval for fall 2007. My dissertation (2004) was related to job satisfaction among academic advisors.

Additionally, I have a commitment to service and to helping others achieve their own personal successes as demonstrated by my decades-long involvement with Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout Mom), the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (Past Mother Advisor), and my faith community (council member and various committees).

I welcome the challenges and opportunities that this position would provide and would appreciate your vote of confidence. Thank you.
