Platform
Statement:
-
Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will
help you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within
this particular unit as a member thus far?
Although I only recently joined this commission, over the past
few years I have attended various sessions at regional and national
conferences related to this topic. Much of my own work is focused
on extending the theory and philosophy of advising by integrating
knowledge from other disciplines to inform the theory and practice
of advising.
-
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit
and the Association?
I believe it is important that this commission focus on expanding
the theoretical base of advising by integrating current knowledge
and practices from related disciplines, further clarifying the
construct of advising, and bridging the gap between theory and
practice in ways that support efforts in both arenas.
- Why are
you interested in serving in this leadership position or what
influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I was nominated for this position, I am not sure by whom. Honestly,
however, I am passionate about interdisciplinary theory building
and am committed to making theory more interesting and important
to people by bridging the gap between theory and practice and
by teaching others to do so.
-
Provide any additional comments or information (either personal
or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know
about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.
I
am a student of theory and philosophy and a practitioner of advising
and counseling. I hold a bachelors in history, a masters in organizational
management, and I am completing a Ph.D. in the interdisciplinary
study of leadership (which I see as closely associated with advising
in many ways). I have worked at three different institutions as
an advisor, an administrator, and an instructor. Currently, I
am a member of our colleges governing board for advising and am
developing and conducting career advisor training programs for
our advisors and a special topics course in career and academic
advising (PSY 475R), which I will teach in the spring. I am passionate
about advising, students, leadership, and theory building. I appreciate
your consideration.
