Statement:
Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that
will help you in leading this unit. What roles have
you played within this particular unit as a member thus far? |
Current Chair Kris Rugsaken called upon me when the commission was
asked to produce a vignette for the purpose of training advisors
on multicultural issues. I led the group and provided leadership
on this project.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association?
I
would like to be clear about my candidacy. I am a new face to NACADA
and for some that might be an issue. I hope that for others it is
a reminder that new members often times bring new and innovative
ideas to organizations to NACADA. Unfortunately, I was unable to
make the trek to Baltimore for the National Conference due to family
obligations, but I am concerned with the lack of diversity in NACADA
and on campuses around the nation as expressed by some of my colleagues
on the commission.
My
first priority as Chair will be to work with my steering committee
to convene a sub-committee to gather data on the trends of multiculturality
in the advising field. This sub-committee's report will give us
some insight into the concerns of those in the advising community
when it comes to multiculturality and the representation of various
groups in advising positions and within NACADA itself. After gathering
data and discussing the issues, I will move with the members of
the commission to attempt to implement change using a bottom-up
approach. If we begin to implement constructive change and recognize
the first step to changing some of these patterns begins with the
commission, then we can begin our work there and move up the ladder
to address these issues at the institutional level.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
A
diversity fellowship (Eugene Cota-Robles) permitted me to pursue
my graduate work at UC Berkeley and I recognize from my own experience
what an invaluably positive impact multiculturality brings to a
campus and to the advisors who serve the campus communities. I am
passionate about the work of this commission and feel that while
I have not been a member of NACADA for as long as other candidates,
I come to you with bold and fresh ideas and most importantly, an
inner passion to lead this commission.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
