More
than 150 years ago, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in his famous essay
"Self-Reliance" that we must all strive to do what "inly rejoices"
us-to do those things which make us happy. For me, at least, these
words strike a sympathetic chord. What "inly rejoices" me is my
connection to the people of NACADA. The work that I have gladly
contributed to the Association has been and continues to be a labor
of love, and all undertaken in support of student success in all
of its many dimensions. The projects carried out, the goals achieved,
the visions made reality-all appear as mere bullet points below,
but behind each of these bullets is an issue that required attention,
a tradition that needed to be revisited, a concept that required
translation into reality-all in service, ultimately, to improving
the lives and academic careers of our students.
A
sampling of my involvement across the Association includes serving
on NACADA's Board of Directors and Council, serving as an instructor
for both the Faculty Seminars and the Summer Institutes, chairing
the Advisory Board for the new "Scenes for Learning and Reflection"
Professional Development DVD, creating an Awards Oversight Committee,
restructuring the National Awards program, serving on the Advising
Administration Commission's Steering Committee, chairing NACADA's
National Awards Committee. Perhaps the most generally instructive
(and productive) positions I've held are those NACADA Board and
Council. In these positions, I have been able to observe just how
nicely NACADA's organizational structure works by allowing all voices
of the Association to be recognized through the Regional Division,
the Commissions and Interest Groups, and the Administrative Division.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do you
feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these goals
and initiatives?
- Address the academic advising
needs of higher education globally.
- Advance the body of knowledge
of academic advising.
- Champion the educational role
of academic advising to enhance student learning and development
in a diverse world.
- Educate university and college
decision makers about the role of quality academic advising in
higher education.
- Ensure the effectiveness of the
NACADA organization.
These five broadly drawn statements serve as guideposts for the
future of the Association and define the critical issues facing
academic advising, issues such as 1) continuing to provide comprehensive
professional development opportunities for our members; 2) promoting
and supporting research related to the enhancement of academic advising;
3) building national and international partnerships among various
advising constituencies and other professional organizations; 4)
developing practical strategies and materials for college and university
leadership in order to ensure the sustainability of the Association's
commitment to student success; and 5) extending NACADA's reach around
the globe.
Perhaps
the best contributions that the President of the Association can
make are to promote the involvement of all relevant constituencies
in our efforts both within and beyond the academy and to make certain
that we follow through on our priorities. It is in this way that
the strategic plan can assume substance and meaning.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
As
a result of the various positions I have held in the Association
(voluntary, appointed, and elected), I have had the opportunity
to observe just how quickly NACADA has grown and expanded-and changed-in
just a relatively short time. The leadership of the Association
must continue to be responsive, sensitive, and accountable to the
changing needs of its membership. I am interested in helping to
make sure the leadership remains receptive to the needs of its members.
Also
influential in my decision to run for President are those who have
served in leadership roles in the past. From them, I have been fortunate
enough to learn exactly what it means to work in an atmosphere of
genial good will and shared goals, and to exchange ideas and experiences
cooperatively for the greater good. Others who are nominated for
NACADA leadership positions this year will say, as I do, that serving
in a leadership role is also a wonderful way to give back to an
organization that has given us so much.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
NACADA
is an Association comprised of nearly 11,000 members, and it needs
leaders who are willing to devote significant time and energy to
serve them. NACADA both deserves and requires this sort of commitment.
I pleased to be affiliated with an organization that embraces the
talents and ideas of all of its members, an organization whose membership
understands that, when all is said and done, it's all about people.
It's all about our members, and it's all about the students we serve.
