Statement:
Highlight
your previous involvement within this unit that will help
you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within
this particular unit as a member thus far? |
I
have been a Member Career Services (MCS) committee member since
2006. From 2006 through earlier this year, the committee had minimal
functionality and a lack of involved leadership. Earlier this year,
NACADA explored the possibility of eliminating the committee, but
the committee members and other NACADA members felt a need for the
Member Career Services committee functions. Once the committee re-grouped
and became re-established, I was asked to step in as the chair of
the committee in June. Since then, the MCS committee and I have
accomplished and continue to work toward accomplishing the MCS committee
annual goals as listed below.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association ?
My
goals for the MCS Committee are to:
-
Appoint committee members, two per NACADA region (in progress).
-
Update sample cover letters and resumes on the web site (in progress).
-
Continue offering presentations at national conferences on "How
to Conduct an Academic Advising Job Search".
-
Write regular Career Corner articles for "Academic Advising Today"
(Two completed since July, future submissions in development).
-
Provide staffing of the Member Career Services desk at the national
conference (completed in 2008, in progress for 2009).
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I
am interested in continuing to revitalize the Member Career Services
Committee and its activities. With the committee's help, I will
continue to work to make the career service activities of NACADA
more user-friendly and accessible to the membership.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
I
have been an academic advisor for ten years at the University of
Illinois at Chicago (1998-2001) and at Indiana University-Purdue
University Fort Wayne (2001-present) where I have chaired and participated
in more than twenty vice chancellor, academic advisor, career counselor,
and support staff searches. I have also worked in a joint advising/career
services office for seven years, and worked in a career services
office during graduate school. Through these processes, I found
myself enjoying the challenge and excitement of searches, and hope
to continue being involved with serving the special career needs
of academic advisors.
