Two-Year Colleges Commission Chair

(2-year term, Oct 2009-Oct 2011)

Tim Kirkner

Montgomery College

Rockville, MD

Platform Statement:

Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will help you in leading this unit.  What roles have you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?

Thus far, I have only been a member of the commission.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association?

I see continued education of administration to be a primary goal for all two year institutions. At Montgomery College, we have finally seen a shift in attitude from our leadership regarding advising. Once viewed as simply a tool to get students registered, some now see the benefits of developmental advising and advising as teaching. The road to change is long but the conversations are finally taking place.

In addition we need to continue to look at technology and how to use it effectively. With tough economic times ahead and budgetary constraints, the two year commission needs to find ways to share information that goes beyond the listserv. Increasing the drive-in workshops, podcasting, etc...should be explored.

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

I am interested in this position to keep the conversation going at my institution so our students get what they deserve. As President for a small career counseling organization, I learned that as a leader you serve as a catalyst for growth. Change is just cool!

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.
