Diversity Committee Chair

(2-year term, Oct 2009-Oct 2011)

Jobila Williams

College of William and Mary

Williamsburg, VA

Platform Statement:

Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will help you in leading this unit.  What roles have you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?

As a previous member of the Diversity Committee, I had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Emerging Leadership Program development. I continuously find ways to get involved when it comes to matters of diversity. I have enjoyed our in depth discussions and exchange of ideas on various programs that will help promote diversity within NACADA. The experience has been quite rewarding, but there is still much work to be done.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association ?

I think it is quite important that we "create environments and processes that promote and sustain inclusion and involvement in the association." An important area that was discussed among committee members includes the involvement of NACADA members from HBCUs, Native American and Tribal Colleges, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and other underrepresented institutions. In addition, it is important to continue to encourage diversity in leadership positions, and improving global visibility. Lastly, as the chair of the Diversity Committee, it is also important to encourage dialogue that includes all aspects of diversity.

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a NACADA member. I love what this organization and its members have to offer. I also believe in what NACADA stands for and would love to be part of that mission. As an advocate for diversity, I would love to take a leadership position in an area for which I am quite passionate. With the encouragement of colleagues and as a personal goal of mine through the Emerging Leaders program, I saw this position as a great opportunity to get involved and to further develop the wonderful ideas that our members have to offer.

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.
