Over 600 presentation proposals were received.  If you submitted a proposal, you will receive notification of its status by mid-April. Our thanks go to Stacy Woycheck and her 2007 Program Committee, NACADA Commission Chairs and the hundreds of readers who made the proposal selection process run smoothly.

NACADA Emerging Leaders Program

The Diversity Committee has developed the NACADA Emerging Leaders Program to encourage members from diverse groups to get involved in leadership opportunities within the organization, outfit participants with the skills and tools necessary to purse elected and appointed leadership positions, to increase the number of leaders from diverse groups and to encourage and assist members of underrepresented populations to attend state, regional or annual conferences.

Diversity, as defined by the NACADA Board of Directors, includes ethnicity, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation as well as diversity in regard to institutional type, institutional size and employment position. Involvement in the Association also is viewed broadly including leadership at many levels (within the division units, at the division level, at the Council level, at the Board of Directors level and with the various work groups, ad hoc committees, Advisory Boards and task forces); serving on the Consultants' Bureau; writing for the NACADA Journal, Academic Advising Today and the NACADA Clearinghouse of Advising Resources; or presenting at state, allied member, regional and annual conferences.

Annually, 10 Emerging Leaders and 10 Mentors will be selected for the two-year program in which the leaders and mentors will work closely on connecting the participants to the areas of the Association in which they are interested and in developing a plan for continued involvement and growth in the Association. Leaders selected will receive $1,500 for the first year of the program to assist them with travel to state, regional and annual conferences.

In addition to these leaders, the 10 NACADA regions will invest at least $1,000 annually toward supporting Emerging Leaders in the regions. More information on the region focus will be forthcoming.

Applications from both Emerging Leaders and Mentors are due May 14, 2007.

June Webinar Broadcast

Expanding Your Comfort Zone: Strategies for Developing and Demonstrating

Cultural Competence in Academic Advising

Don't miss this live Webinar Event, which will be broadcast over the Internet on Tuesday, June 12, 2007.

As noted by Grewe (June 2007, Academic Advising Today), "Recent statistical trends project that ethnic minorities will become a numerical majority in the United States by the year 2010. The impact of this growth is pervasive and is evident in the current generation of students who are starting to matriculate through collegiate programs, as they are the most racially and ethnically diverse in this nation's history. For those involved with student development at the postsecondary level, this indicates a need to adapt current policies and practices to better meet the unique needs of our students. As academic advisors who are charged with facilitating students toward the development of their total potential, this means the development of new skills and strategies in order to provide more effective advising services."

In this NACADA-sponsored Webinar presentation, Blane Harding (Director of Advising, Recruitment, and Retention for the College of Liberal Arts at Colorado State University) will address:

  • the dynamics of a changing population and the impact this has on education and advising,
  • the development of cultural identity and worldview as important concepts for interaction,
  • challenges and opportunities for interaction and effectiveness while working with diverse student populations, and
  • concepts and strategies for culturally competent advising.

Participants will learn:

  • the results of student self-authorship and ownership of their own education.
  • cultural considerations for intervention with diverse students.
  • the four components of culturally competent advising.
  • theories of ethnic identity development and degrees of acculturation for students.
  • intercultural awareness and perceptions of self.
  • consideration of the individual within a cultural context.
  • how to treat students equally by treating them differently.

Friday, June 1st is the last day to register, but participation is limited by our Service Provider and the event is likely to fill before that date, so visit the Webinar Webpage to learn more and REGISTER today!

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Third Annual

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Burlington, Vermont

June 21-22, 2007

Faculty members have an essential and vital role in the academic advising experiences of students on most campuses. Data in the NACADA 2004 publication, The Status of Academic Advising, indicates that over 80% of four-year institutions, almost 50% of public two-year colleges, and 80% of private two-year institutions utilize models which rely on faculty involvement in academic advising.

Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that they have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process. This two-day seminar will provide faculty with the skills they need to be more effective advisors as well as hands-on strategies and material that faculty and administrators who work with faculty advisors can take back to their campuses to share with other faculty advisors. A "Best Practices" segment will help bring together proven ideas for use on campus.

The three major plenary sessions listed below will be followed by small group work by institutional type or institutional role.

  • Advising as Teaching and Learning
  • Developing Effective Advising Skills
  • Different Perspectives on Advising Effectiveness

Faculty for this seminar will be:

  • Marti Hemwall, Lawrence University
  • Kathy Stockwell, Fox Valley Technical College
  • Peggy Jordan, Oklahoma City Community College
  • Jayne Drake, Temple University

Join us to help advising on your campus be effective in helping students prepare for success.

NOTE: The seminar begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 21 and ends on Friday, June 22 at 3 p.m. The ending time is a change from what was previously published, so please adjust your departure plans accordingly.

Reserve your hotel room now - the block may fill well before the the June 1 deadline. Click here to learn more.

Get Involved with NACADA Commissions & Interest Groups

NACADA members may designate up to four Commissions and/or Interest Groups with which to have official affiliation. This official affiliation primarily identifies those Commissions and/or Interest Groups for which you would have voting privileges, receive activity updates and be eligible to hold an elected or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee or serving as a Commission Chair. Although participation in Commissions and Interest Groups is entirely optional for NACADA members, we encourage you to join those of special interest to you, as they are valuable resources for information and networking.

Click on the links for lists of the current Commissions and Interest Groups. More information on a particular Commission or Interest Group can be reviewed on its individual webpage.

If you would like to designate or change the preferred Commission and/or Interest Group choices with which you would like to be affiliated, please complete this online form. Upon receipt of this information, your membership record will be updated accordingly. If you previously made your selections, but do not recall which Commissions or Interest Groups were designated, you can simply indicate your current preferences via this form and previous choices will be replaced. Please be sure to provide your name and institution information when completing this form so the appropriate member record can be updated. If you have any questions, please contact NACADA at nacada@ksu.edu.

NOTE: Your four selections can be any combination of Commissions and Interest Groups. You can change your Commission and Interest Group affiliations at any time - although you should be aware that this may affect your eligibility for certain awards and elected positions.

Additional Potential Interest Group Formed

The NACADA Commission and Interest Group Division has received an additional proposal to form a Potential Interest Group for Advising First-Year Students.  A Webpage has been created for this group on which a short description of its purpose and focus is posted along with the contact information for Laura Mooney, who will serve as its initial Chair. A list serve has also been established for this group and subscription instructions are available.

Other potential Interest Groups recently formed include the following:

Members interested in these potential Interest Groups will have an opportunity to meet at the 2007 NACADA Annual Conference in Baltimore in October. Each group will also be given an opportunity to participate in the annual Commission and Interest Group Fair at the Conference. Plan to visit these tables at the CIG Fair and attend the organizational meeting of the new group(s) of interest to you.

If you have questions or would like to become involved with one of these groups prior to the fall Conference, please contact the Chair of that group. To designate one or more of these potential Interest Groups as one of your four chosen Commission or Interest Group preferences in your member record, please e-mail NACADA.

Chapter authors explore the advising as teaching and learning paradigm, examine current student demographics, and address learning patterns, self-assessment, and technology as key components of advising. Chapters also explore academic advising before enrollment and beyond the advising office, as well as the critical issue of advising assessment.
