Place Your Order Now for Two New Monographs

We are taking orders now for two soon-to-be-released monographs.  You may order your copy here

Academic Advising: New Insights for Teaching and Learning in the First Year

Mary Stuart Hunter, Betsy McCalla-Wriggins, & Eric R. White, Editors

A joint publication of the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition and the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA)

This new monograph challenges readers to embrace the tremendous potential that academic advising has for educating today's college students and adds significantly to the engaging dialogue on advising as teaching. Chapter authors explore the advising as teaching and learning paradigm, examine current student demographics, and address learning patterns, self-assessment, and technology as key components of advising. Chapters also explore academic advising before enrollment and beyond the advising office, as well as the critical issue of advising assessment. The needs of diverse populations of first-year students are also addressed.

New Advisor Guidebook:  Mastering the Art of Academic Advising through the First Year & Beyond

New academic advisors note that watching a skilled veteran advisor with students is like watching an artist at work. Their conferences are "jam-packed" with information, yet have the ease and fluidity of a conversation. Until now becoming an excellent advisor has been entirely an experiential journey. Now there is a guidebook that can help new professionals master the art of academic advising.

Insightful contributions from more than 30 academic advising professionals provide new advisors with the essentials needed to help students grow and make the most out of their college experiences. A professional growth chart helps new professionals not just survive but thrive, during their first year and beyond. Exemplary Practices from across the country highlight what colleges and universities can do to help new advisors succeed. "Voices from the Field" commentaries offer reflections from new and experienced advisors on what it takes to move from new hire to successful advising professional.

It takes but one SPARK to ignite the flame for an idea. Does your campus have an unusual or exceptional process or program that could spark an idea on another campus?  If so, tell us about it in 350 words or less. Send your 'Sparkler' to Leigh Cunningham.
NACADA Journal

The fall 2006 issue of the NACADA Journal is in the mail!  Watch for your member copy before the holiday break.

Dreaming of Winter Break? Catching up on your professional reading? Consider requesting a book for review in the NACADA Journal.  Completed reviews for books selected now will be due in mid-March. Find a listing of currently available books on the Web.

Advising in the Spotlight

Michael M. Crow, president of Arizona State University, has authored Advisers Help in Arizona, an article in the November 3, 2006 Forum section of The Chronicle of Higher Education.   (Note: you may need your institution's password to access The Chronicle site).  In his article Crow discusses how advisors help rural students overcome common obstacles.

Also in The Chronicle of Higher Education, December 1, 2006 edition - the 2006 Community College Survey of Student Engagement (known by its acronym, Cessie) reveals that 2-Year-College Students Rarely Use Advisers.  The 2006 CCSSE  is also discussed in the November 28, 2006 edition of Inside Higher Ed, which points out The Full Time Advantage - "the academic experience of full-time students is substantially more interactive than that of their part-time peers."

2007 NACADA Awards Call for Nominations

The 2007 Awards Call for Nominations, including nomination/application criteria, deadlines and forms, is available online.  All information and forms can be accessed on the NACADA Annual Awards Program website. The deadline for the receipt of nomination materials for most award categories is March 5, 2007.

Please closely review the applicable information in the 2007 Awards Call before submitting your final nomination materials, as there have been changes in the criteria for certain awards. Refer to the 2007 Call for Nominations on the Awards website for more detailed information about all award categories and applicable eligibility criteria and submission procedures.

Network With Your Colleagues - Join a Commission or Interest Group!

A great way to network with your colleagues is to join a NACADA Commission or Interest Group (IG). Members can choose any combination of Commissions and IGs - up to a total of four (4) selections - in which they would like to have official membership. This official affiliation primarily identifies those Commissions and/or IGs for which you would have voting privileges, receive periodic electronic newsletters and updates, and be eligible to hold an elected or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee or serving as chair. Please note that you can be informally involved with as many other Commissions or IGs as you like, such as joining list serves, attending meetings, etc. We encourage you to review the available Commissions and Interest Groups, and join those of interest to you.

If you wish to change your preferred Commission and/or IG choices, you can easily do so by completing the online form. If you previously made your selections but do not recall which Commissions or IGs were designated, you can simply indicate your current preferences via this form and previous choices will be replaced. Please be sure to include the requested identification information so the appropriate member record is updated.

NOTE: Your official Commission designations will determine the Commission Chair elections in which you will be eligible to vote in the 2007 elections.

Additions to Commission and Interest Group List Serves Completed

At the Annual Conference in Indianapolis, many of you signed up for the Commission and Interest Group (CIG) list serves either at the CIG Fair or on signup sheets circulated at the annual meetings for these groups. The task of updating these list serves accordingly has now been completed. For instructions on posting messages to the list serves, please visit this webpage and click on the link for the applicable list serve(s). Instructions for subscribing and unsubscribing to these list serves are also available.

Your observance of network etiquette is encouraged and appreciated when communicating via these lists.

Thank you for your interest in and participation on these list serves!  Remember - these list serves may not be used to promote commercial products, programs or services, or for campaigning purposes.

Using the Digest Format for List Serves

To help minimize the number of e-mails you receive that are generated from list serves, you might want to consider setting up each of your list subscriptions for the "digest" mode. All you need to do is send an e-mail using only the following command in the body of the message, where "listname" is the list's ID (such as N-ADVADMIN for the Advising Administration Commission list serve):

SET listname DIGEST

Leave the subject line blank. Be sure to delete any signature lines and/or turn off auto-inclusion of your signature file before sending the above command. (LISTSERV treats signature lines as commands and will send error messages saying "unknown command".)

Should you set the digest mode and then decide later that you prefer the original format and want to turn off the digest mode, follow the same procedures as outlined above, but include the following command in the e-mail body:

Set listname mail

Note: A downside to using the digest format is that, each time you reply to the list, all of the history that is there gets posted to the digest every time. It could make the digested e-mails too long to bother reading unless you can convince other subscribers to edit their e-mails to remove all of the history.

Note: NACADA list serves do not support attachments, primarily due to the risk of viruses. To share information in document form with other subscribers, you will need to post it on your institution's website and provide a link, or ask colleagues to contact you individually to request that the information be sent to them directly. You could also include the text directly in your e-mail posting.

Summer Professional Development Opportunities

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Burlington, VT

June 21-22, 2007

Faculty members have an essential and vital role in the academic advising experiences of students on most campuses.   Data in the NACADA 2004 publication, The Status of Academic Advising, indicates that over 80% of 4-year institutions, almost 50% of public 2-year colleges and 80% of private 2 year institutions utilize models which rely on faculty involvement in academic advising.

Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that faculty and administrators work together to ensure that faculty have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process.  This two-day seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance faculty advising and programs as well as gain essential insights on ways to foster collaboration between faculty and administrators responsible for advising.

21st Annual Academic Advising Summer Institutes

The most comprehensive consideration of academic advising available, the 2007 Summer Institutes will be held in both Burlington, VT, June 24-29 and Salt Lake City, UT, July 29-Aug. 3, 2007. The intensive, week-long Institutes are centered around seeking and disseminating information in general sessions, workshops, topical sessions and small group discussions, with the goal of developing practical, individualized Action Plans for enhancement of academic advising on your campuses.  Participants in the Burlington Institute will want to consider attending the Effectively Engaging Faculty Seminar as well.

Applications for Summer Institute Scholarships are due March 5 (for either institute) and May 1 (for the Salt Lake City Institute only).

More information will be available on the Summer Institute webpage.

Summer Institute Faculty - NACADA will soon be selecting faculty for the 2007 Summer Institutes.  If you wish to be considered, please be sure that your listing in the NACADA Expertise Database is up-to-date.  If you have previously registered with the Expertise Database and wish to update your information, simply register again by including your name and marking any additional topics or levels of expertise you wish to add.  Multiple entries by the same person are merged at the Executive Office, thus negating the need for you to re-enter all information with each update.  Presentations at Regional and Annual Conferences enhance your opportunity to be selected by providing evaluative data upon which to make selections.
