2006
Annual Conference a Tremendous Success!
Nearly
2,600 colleagues
came to Indianapolis October 18-21 to share information
on current advising topics. To paraphrase one participant:
"I thought this Conference was outstanding. I
have never been to a conference where the rooms were so
full with participants on the last day of the conference.
Obviously, the Conference attendees were really energized
in Indianapolis and eager to learn as much as they could."
During
the Conference, NACADA Annual Award winners and
Certificate of Merit recipients, along with this
year's retirees from the advising profession,
were honored at a special Awards Ceremony and Reception.
Visit here
to view pictures of all recipients at the Ceremony.
After
Conference hours, attendees enjoyed the numerous nearby
dining and entertainment opportunities. Congratulations
to the Conference Committee: Alan Welch
(Chair), Sue Aufderheide, Larry
Ottinger, Thomas Kenyon, Barbara
Austin, Janice Keim, Jerry
Harrell, Thomas Konkle, Cathy
Buyarski and Lisa Ruch for a job
well done.
Dr.
George Kuh has provided NACADA with the
following materials from his plenary session
on October 18, 2006.

Accountability
in Academic Advising: Data-Driven Decision Making to Promote
Institutional Change
Seminar, January 25-26
Are
you preparing for an accreditation visit or self study?
Need
to gather data to justify a new program?
Looking
for ways to use your assessment data to make changes in
your advising program?
Then
This Is The Seminar For You!
Today, in
higher education, accountability is a key
issue being driven by state legislatures, regional accrediting
bodies, and the public at large. With the drive for accountability
comes the need to collect and use data effectively by administrators
in decision making and program development to increase the
success of students across the institution.
|
This
seminar will provide participants with:
- Strategies for effectively collecting data on their
campuses
- Strategies for the analysis of data for decision making
purposes
- Strategies for the effective utilization of data analysis
Participants
will work with case studies and survey data to gain experience
in analyzing data and utilizing it to make decisions concerning
problems or issues on campuses as well as to develop successful
proposals to initiate significant changes on their campuses.

2007
NACADA Assessment of Academic Advising Institute,
January 31-February 2
FORMAT:
The Assessment of Academic Advising Institute
provides a foundation for participants regarding assessment's
critical elements, purposes, and processes. Through presentations
and small group discussion/working sessions, participants
explore strategies for the assessment of academic advising
programs--including establishing clear goals and outcomes
and developing assessment measures for these goals and outcomes.
The Institute provides participants with an understanding
of the cyclical and ongoing nature of assessment. Most importantly,
the Institute offers participants the opportunity to work
with colleagues from similar institutional types and with
other professionals and experts in the fields of advising
and assessment to develop comprehensive assessment plans
for their respective campuses. |
The
2007 Assessment Institute is being designed to respond to
the needs of participants whose institutions are at varying
points within the assessment process. Guidance will be provided
for participants to identify their own institution's experience
level.
Level
1 will be geared to those participants
from institutions and/or academic advising programs that
have limited involvement or experience to date with assessment;
Level
2 will be designed for those participants
who are in the middle of designing their assessment processes
for their academic advising programs or are ready to implement
their respective plans;
Level
3 participants will have engaged in an
assessment cycle for their academic advising programs and
are ready to use the evidence gathered for improvement.
Institute refinements will include more extensive information
regarding measures for gathering evidence and utilizing
advisor learning outcomes to inform professional development
and performance assessment.
New
for this Year :
This year's Assessment Institute will include a follow-up
component to assist participants in continuing their assessment
work once they return to their respective campuses.

Emerging Leader Program in Development |
NACADA is committed
to diversity in its membership and in its leadership.
The Diversity Committee has defined diversity
for the Association from a very broad perspective, which
includes diversity in regard to ethnicity,
gender, gender identity,
and sexual orientation as well as diversity
in regard to institutional type, size,
and employment position. Involvement
in the Association also is viewed broadly, including leadership
at many levels (within the division units, at the division
level, at the Council level, at the Board of Directors
level, and with the various work groups, ad hoc committees,
Advisory Boards, and task forces), serving on the Consultants'
Bureau, writing for the NACADA Journal, Academic
Advising Today, and the NACADA Clearinghouse
of Academic Advising Resources, or presenting at
state, allied member, regional, and national conferences.
To focus on
diversity in our leadership, the Diversity Committee is
developing an Emerging Leader
program that will provide mentoring and
financial assistance to 10 members a year from underrepresented
populations in our Association who wish to become involved
in the leadership of NACADA at various levels. Applications
for both mentors and Emerging Leaders will be available
in March 2007.

Foundations
of Academic Advising - CD Series
CD2 - Academic Advising Delivery Models
"Organizational structure is the framework
for delivering advising services to students. As such, it
is one of the important building blocks for an effective
advising program, regardless of whether the program is defined
at the department, college, campus, or institutional level"
(Pardee, 2004). This CD, which builds on the groundwork
laid in CD1 What is Academic Advising?, explains
the seven most widely used advising delivery models (self-contained,
faculty only, satellite, total intake, dual, split, supplementary)
and discusses why they are an important consideration when
assessing, evaluating or re-evaluating any advising system.
An excellent tool
for both individual auditory/visual learners and group presentations.
Along with audio/visual presentation modules, includes Voices
of Experience section, Models comparison chart, and handout/notes
pages for use with group professional development / training.

Effectively
Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising
Seminar
Burlington,
VT
June
21-22, 2007
Faculty members
have an essential and vital role in the academic advising
experiences of students on most campuses. Data in the NACADA
2004 publication, The Status of Academic Advising,
indicate that over 80% of 4-year institutions, almost 50%
of public 2-year colleges and 80% of private 2 year institutions
utilize models which rely on faculty involvement in academic
advising.
|
Since
faculty play such an integral role in academic advising,
it is imperative that faculty and administrators work together
to assure that faculty have the information, tools and resources
to effectively engage in the advising process.
This two-day seminar
will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance
faculty advising and programs as well as gain essential
insights on ways to foster collaboration between faculty
and administrators responsible for advising.

| NACADA
and NCAA Partnership to Support Student-Athletes |
The
National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and the
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have established
a partnership to further student-athlete development
and academic success, with the goal of supporting
recent NCAA academic reform efforts.
The
partnership aligns with the NCAA's continued academic reform
efforts and will add both an in-person Institute and an
online course for university personnel across the nation
to the NACADA roster of academic advising resources. The
partnership will provide a unique opportunity to encourage
collaboration between athletics and non-athletics, campus
administrators and faculty in best practices for the integration
of student learning and academic advising with NCAA policies
and rules to ensure student-athlete success.
This
partnership represents what is believed to be the first
programming to assist institutions in assimilating the student-athlete
into the mainstream campus community. These two new programs
will begin to help institutions better understand student-athletes
as they are mainstreamed and will best assure the success
of such integrations. NACADA is pleased to have been selected
to develop these important initiatives to mirror the success
of our other Institutes and Seminars.
