Charlie Nutt Named NACADA Executive Director

After an international search, Dean Michael Holen of Kansas State University has named Charlie Nutt Executive Director of NACADA replacing Roberta "Bobbie" Flaherty who moved into phased retirement on August 1. Nutt, who has been with the Executive Office since 2002 as Associate Director, was actively involved in a variety of association leadership roles prior to assuming the Associate Director responsibilities. He has served on the faculty of several NACADA Institutes, written for a variety of NACADA publications, served as keynote speaker or workshop facilitator on numerous campuses, and worked with various campuses to evaluate their advising programs and services and provide recommendations for improvements.

Prior to coming to the NACADA Executive Office and Kansas State University, Nutt served in various capacities for 17 years at Coastal Georgia Community College including Vice President for Student Development, Director of Advisement/Orientation, Registrar, and Assistant Professor of English. He taught and served as an administrator in secondary education as well.

Nutt has an Associate degree in English from Brunswick College, Bachelors in Education from the University of Georgia, and Masters in Education and Doctorate of Education from Georgia Southern University.

Appreciation from Bobbie Flaherty:

I would like to thank everyone who provided expressions of appreciation and best wishes for my retirement during the Baltimore conference. As you know, the touching tribute at the opening session was a wonderful surprise! Having so many past presidents on stage and receiving such a warm reception from the audience will long be remembered as a highlight of my career. Thank you one and all! I will think of you all as I relax in my new rocking chair while viewing the beautiful framed painting of the Flint Hills of Kansas! You are always welcome to visit me there.

2007 Annual Conference a Tremendous Success!

Over 3,100 colleagues came to Baltimore on October 18-21 to share information on current advising topics. To paraphrase one participant: "Thanks for putting on a spectacular conference. As a newbie to NACADA, and a relatively new professional in Student Affairs, I appreciated the breadth and depth provided in the sessions; and especially enjoyed the welcoming NACADA veterans that made me feel at home."

After conference hours, attendees enjoyed the numerous nearby dining and entertainment opportunities. Congratulations to the conference committee: Stacy Woycheck (Chair), Bill Elliott, Karen Lewis Law, Susan Fread, Bruce Norris, Karen Archambault, Paulette Lail Kashiri, Bethany Spore, Paula Ashby and Kathie Sindt for a job well done.

Dr. Patrick Terenzini has provided NACADA with the following materials from his plenary session. Dr. Sharon Fries-Britt has been asked to submit an article based on her plenary session speech for a future NACADA publication.

2008 ANNUAL CONFERENCE CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Plan now to submit a proposal application for the October 1-4, 2008 conference in Chicago. The conference theme is Taking Advising to New Heights. Submissions from novice as well as experienced presenters are encouraged. The Call for Proposals will be mailed in late November - online submissions will be accepted beginning December 5. The submission deadline is February 11, 2008.

2008 Research Grant Proposal Deadline Approaching

The NACADA Research Committee announces a Request For Proposals (RFP) for NACADA grants that support advising research. Grants up to $5,000 are available to support a single-year proposal. Practicing professionals (administrators and faculty), as well as graduate students seeking support for dissertation research, are eligible.

The Research Committee has two deadlines for 2008 funding proposals: first round of grants November 1, 2007 and second round of grants March 15, 2008. Click here for information regarding the research grants.

Emerging Leaders Meet with Mentors in Baltimore

The Diversity Committee has developed the NACADA Emerging Leaders Program to encourage members from diverse groups to get involved in leadership opportunities within the organization, outfit participants with the skills and tools necessary to pursue elected and appointed leadership positions, increase the number of leaders from diverse groups, and encourage and assist members of underrepresented populations to attend State, Regional, or National Conferences.

After several years of preparation, the Diversity Committee and the Emerging Leaders Development Team are proud to announce that the 2007-2009 NACADA mentoring partners met throughout the Annual Conference in Baltimore for development, conversation, and group building. The partnerships will continue for two years.

  Emerging Leader Mentor

“I first felt a sense of obligation to follow through and apply to the Emerging Leaders Program with my sole purpose of eventually increasing diversity in the NACADA leadership. What I did not expect, but was pleasantly surprised by, was the sense of energy and commitment from the other Emerging Leaders, my mentor and the ELP Development Team. I realized, in short order, that the Emerging Leaders Program is not only about professional development and increasing diversity in the leadership, but it is also a program that will allow all involved to grow personally and pay forward the opportunity and necessity for involvement from all of NACADA’s constituents.” - Emerging Leader Todd Taylor

“It’s about giving back and moving forward.  NACADA, as THE premier organization in the world to support and promote quality academic advising, has given me so much over the years that I now have the opportunity to give back by serving as a mentor in the Emerging Leaders Program.  In doing so, I am helping the Association move forward by cultivating the next generations of leaders from diverse and underrepresented groups. They are our future.” - Mentor Jayne Drake

Advising by Design: Planning the Future of Academic Advising on Your Campus - February 14-15, 2008

Planning strategically for quality academic advising experiences for your students is essential. It is imperative that advisors and advising administrators have the knowledge of the skills and resources needed for planning and designing the future of advising on their campuses and be able to lead their campuses in this planning. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet other colleagues who are facing the same challenges for planning as you. This seminar is a MUST for campuses facing accreditation, issues of restructuring or reorganization, or campus-wide initiatives to improve student success, graduation, and persistence rates. For more information click here.

6th Annual Academic Advising Administrators' Institute - February 17-19, 2008

Learning Communities and Faculty will provide an environment for participants to find guidance in the development of an action plan for improvement or change on your campus and network and learn from administrators from a variety of institutional types and sizes.

New this year to the Administrators’ Institute – an Experienced Track! Nancy King, Vice President of Kennesaw State University, and facilitator to this new track has this to say: “I am very excited about the opportunity to work with a group of experienced administrators in San Diego! This is a brand new track in AI, and I am looking forward to facilitating this group, who will have much to share with one another as a result of their collective wide range of administrative experience. My primary goals for our group will be threefold:

  • to build on the group's extensive administrative experience by identifying some new approaches and tools that will strengthen our advising programs and our institutions
  • to enhance our ability to embrace change and influence campus culture in ways that will increase student success on our campuses
  • to equip participants with the tools they need in areas such as emergency planning, staff development, and use of technology from an administrator's perspective

Most importantly, my overarching goal is to establish a group that will facilitate networking among campus leaders and provide an opportunity for professional renewal and excitement about the future!”

Nancy King will be joined by Pamela Marsh Williams, Assistant Provost & Dean, University of Massachusetts-Amherst for this exciting track! Click here to find more information!

5th Annual Assessment of Academic Advising Institute - February 20-22, 2008

The Assessment of Academic Advising Institute provides a foundation for participants regarding assessment's critical elements, purposes, and processes. Through presentations and small group discussion/working sessions, participants explore strategies for the assessment of academic advising programs-including establishing clear goals and outcomes and developing assessment measures for these goals and outcomes. The Institute provides participants with an understanding of the cyclical and ongoing nature of assessment. Most importantly, the Institute offers participants the opportunity to work with colleagues from similar institutional types and with other professionals and experts in the fields of advising and assessment to develop comprehensive assessment plans for their respective campuses. Join other colleagues as they work through the process of making Assessment a success. Bring a team from your institution to get your Assessment program up and running! Visit the website to see a tentative schedule.

It is critical that you book your lodging as early as possible. The deadline for receiving the discounted hotel rate is January 19, 2008, but the hotel may fill prior to that deadline. Visit the Double Tree Hotel reservations site today!

  Plan Ahead for January Webinar

Academic Advising and Support in Residential Learning Communities

Webinar - Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Is your institution or advising unit thinking about ways to bring academic advising and support beyond the classroom setting?  Kansas State University's Derek Jackson and Nick Lander contend that Residence Hall Communities are an ideal place to provide these services.  Plan now to join them in a discussion of innovative programs that have been designed at various institutions to either supplement academic advising and support or merge the residential community experience with the academic experience of students.

These programs are designed for:

Network With Your Colleagues -- Join a Commission or Interest Group!

A great way to network with your colleagues is to join a NACADA Commission or Interest Group (IG). Members can choose any combination of Commissions and IGs - up to a total of four (4) selections - in which they would like to have official membership. This official affiliation primarily identifies those Commissions and/or IGs for which you would have voting privileges, receive periodic electronic newsletters and updates, and be eligible to hold an elected or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee or serving as chair. Please note that you can be informally involved with as many other Commissions or IGs as you like, such as joining list serves, attending meetings, etc.

We encourage you to review the list of available Commissions and Interest Groups, and join those of interest to you. Those of you who recently attended the Annual Conference in Baltimore had an opportunity to talk with Commission and Interest Group Chairs at the Commission and Interest Group Fair held on Friday morning.

If you wish to change your preferred Commission and/or IG choices, you can easily do so by completing the online form. If you previously made your selections but do not recall which Commissions or IGs were designated, you can simply indicate your current preferences via this form and previous choices will be replaced. Please be sure to include the requested identification information so the appropriate member record is updated.

Note: Your official Commission designations will determine the Commission Chair elections in which you will be eligible to vote in the 2008 elections.

The December edition of NACADA's quarterly e-Publication, Academic Advising Today, is in the final stages of publication. Some of the pieces you can look forward to in December are:

Shared Responsibilities, Shared Opportunities by Jennifer Joslin (The University of Iowa)

The Impact of Policies and Environments upon Undecided Students by David B. Spight (The University of Texas at Austin)

Goal-Setting for Study Abroad Learning Outcomes by Jodi Malmgren (University of Minnesota)

We are also accepting article and *Sparkler* submissions for possible publication in the March edition (submission deadline November 15). If you are interested in sharing your thoughts with your colleagues in this format, check out the guidelines today!

Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources

Featured this month in the Clearinghouse:
  • In November advisors see students who are unsure about their major. The Clearinghouse's career and major links bring a variety of resources to advisors' desktops including "5 signs you should change your major" from MonsterTRAK.
  • Digital Native and Digital Immigrant: Which language do you speak? Brad Cunningham, Kansas State University, looks at today’s students and how they explore their world. Campuses may want to use this article at advisor "brown bag" lunches to stimulate discussion regarding today's technology-savvy students.
  • Theories of advising. Sherri Williams, Memorial University of Newfoundland and NACADA/Kansas State University graduate certificate student, explores the various theories that serve as the foundation for our profession.

NACADA Sponsored List Serves and List Serve Etiquette

NACADA maintains over 50 list serves for global discussions of academic advising issues. Subscribers are encouraged to use these lists for questions and discussion on a variety of advising topics.

NACADA does not provide automatic enrollment to its list serves. Find directions to subscribe and unsubscribe on each list's home page; all list serve home pages are linked from here.

Network etiquette (often referred to as "netiquette") are informal rules and procedures established for users of e-mail and list serves to provide them with some simple guidelines to make these electronic communication tools more enjoyable and less annoying or bothersome. Since all Commissions and Interest Groups have their own list serves, the Commission and Interest Group Division (CIGD) put together a summary of guidelines that subscribers are encouraged to follow when posting messages and communicating electronically via these lists. These guidelines can be found on the CIGD website. A link to these guidelines can also be found on the NACADA list serves webpage.

Faculty Advisors and Advising Administrators Plan to Attend!

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

June 19-20, 2008 in Portsmouth, Va.

Faculty members have an essential and vital role in the academic advising experiences of students on most campuses. Data in the NACADA 2004 publication, The Status of Academic Advising, indicates that over 80% of four-year institutions, almost 50% of public two-year colleges and 80% of private two-year institutions utilize models which rely on faculty involvement in academic advising. Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that faculty and administrators work together to assure that faculty have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process.

This two-day seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance faculty advising and programs as well as gain essential insights on ways to foster collaboration between faculty and administrators responsible for advising. Click here to learn more.

Two Summer Institute Opportunities

2008 NACADA Academic Advising Summer Institutes

June 22-27 - Portsmouth, Va.

and

July 27-August 1 - Austin, Texas

Join administrators, advisors and faculty advisors for a comprehensive look at academic advising today. Along with general sessions, workshops and topicals, participants develop an Action Plan for enhancing or improving advising on their individual campuses. You might be interested in looking at descriptions of some of the Action Plans prepared for past Institutes.

Plan now to arrange for teams or individuals from your institution to attend in 2008! And YES! - A limited number of scholarships are available for Summer Institute attendance. Applications will be available in December on the Annual Awards Program website and will be due by early March.

Because many institutions have varying summer schedules and the Institute has limited enrollment/faculty ratios, we offer the Institute two times each summer.  So, choose either by date or location - we welcome you at either one!  Register soon to ensure your participation!

More information will be available on the Summer Institute webpage soon!

Summer Institute Faculty – NACADA will soon be selecting faculty for the 2008 Summer Institutes. If you wish to be considered, please be sure that your listing in the NACADA Expertise Database is up-to-date. If you have previously registered with the Expertise Database and wish to update your information, simply register again by including your name and marking any additional topics or levels of expertise you wish to add. Multiple entries by the same person are merged at the Executive Office, thus negating the need for you to re-enter all information with each update. Presentations at regional and national conferences enhance your opportunity to be selected by providing evaluative data upon which to make selections.
