Advising Special Populations Monograph

Exemplary Practice Application

Narrative revisions programs SELECTED for inclusion are due February 5, 2007

Apply for possible inclusion as an Exemplary Practice in the upcoming Advising Special Populations monograph. The monograph will have chapters devoted to the nuances of advising a specific student population group.  Each chapter will also include Exemplary Practices an advising that group of students. 

Nominated programs focus on advising ONE of the following student groups:

  • Advising across cultures (multicultural advising)
  • Adult Learners
  • Two-Year college students
  • Underprepared/developmental students
  • Student Athletes
  • Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) students
  • Students on academic sanction (probation, suspension, dismissal, etc.)
  • Undecided/Undeclared/Exploratory/Deciding students

Email questions and completed narrative revisions to miller@ksu.edu.

Narrative Guide

In a maximum of eight double-spaced page, the narrative include the following:

  • Special Population served by your program
  • Name of your college/university
  • Location (city, state, province, etc.)
  • Institutional type (two-year, four-year, public, private, proprietary)
  • Highest degree granted by your institution. (Ph.D., Master's, Baccalaureate, associate's, etc.)
  • Institutional Size ... (student head count)
  • Demographic description of your institution/location (cultural, economic, population, etc.)
  • Delivery method used for advising ... (Is advising done within a college/school/department or for the entire institution?
  • Does each advisor have a caseload? Are advisees seen on a drop in basis?
  • Additional students served by your advising unit
  • Contact Information (Name, Title of individual responsible for advising special populations program)
  • Program History
  • Program Mission and Objectives
  • Program Description How do you serve this special population group on your campus?
  • How do you evaluate the success of your program?
  • What do you consider to be your program's strengths?
  • What do you consider your program's toughest challenges?
  • Appendix: Advisor Training Materials Used
  • Appendix: Evaluation Materials Used

Submit the narrative as a Word document attached to an email addressed to miller@ksu.edu. Narrative revisions should be double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 point type.   Use one inch margins.
