The economic pressures facing higher education have resulted in intensified efforts to support student success. For many campuses, this means increasing student persistence and retention to graduation.
George Kuh, in his text, Creating Conditions that Matter (2005) states clearly that the time and effort students put into their studies are important variables in the student success formula. Equally important are the ways institutions construct and support environments that connect students to the campus and to high-impact learning experiences.
This seminar, Strategies for Increasing Student Persistence and Retention, will focus on several key issues for the participants:
- The research and scholarship connection between academic advising and campus efforts to enhance student persistence to graduation
- Strategies to build collaborative campus partnerships between faculty, staff, and students to support student success
- The link between academic advising and the instructional mission of the institution
- Strategies to increase students engagement in experiences known to enhance learning success
- Strategies to foster a campus culture committed to student engagement, persistence, and success
