Global Engagement Advising Community

Each year advisors are encountering a growing number of advisees from a diverse student group--students wishing to engage as global citizens. This population may include international and ESL students, or domestic students who study abroad. Students hail from a wide range of cultural and economic backgrounds; they are diverse in age, education and ability. Many international students face specific obstacles that can be challenging for advisors to address. Cultural adjustment, financial, emotional and language proficiency are just a few obstacles ESL and international students may have to overcome.

Domestic students who study abroad may experience these same fears and anxieties at the thought of leaving the comfort of what they know for an international education opportunity. Advisors may need to motivate students to study abroad, evaluate coursework for academic credit, discuss financial options and advise returned students. The varied needs of students means that advisors unfamiliar with study abroad, as well as those who wish to encourage study abroad among their advisees, need knowledge , tools and resources.

The Global Engagement Advising Community aims to create a space where advisors can share their knowledge and experience of working with ESL, international and education abroad students. The community once merged with the Study Abroad Interest Group and hopes to encourage advisors to share and discuss approaches, techniques and strategies used to advise global student populations. The Global Engagement community promotes the values of diversity, inclusivity and global citizenship.
