Position Description ****THIS POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED****ACADEMIC ADVISOR(S), COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, CAL POLY - The College of Engineering ("College") is the largest of Cal Poly's six colleges with eight academic departments and one academic program that offers 13 Bachelor of Science degrees, nine Masters of Science degrees, and six blended/joint bachelor and master's degree programs. The College currently educates over 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students and admission is extremely competitive. The College is recognized as one of the premier undergraduate engineering programs in the nation for its hands-on project and design-based learning environment. The College operates under the leadership of the Dean of the College of Engineering, and a management staff consisting of associate and assistant deans, department chairs, and program directors. The College employs approximately 50 staff and 200 tenured/tenure track faculty and lecturers.Engineering Student Services seeks to enhance academic success by providing student support services, by working in partnership with departments, industry, and students to enrich the academic journey of rising engineers. Our programs include the Engineering Advising Center, Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP), Women's Engineering Program (WEP) and the International Exchange Program (IEP). We also coordinate some outreach services.Under general supervision of the Director for Engineering Student Services, the incumbent provides advising and related retention services. The scope of this position includes traditional advising, MEP, Cal Poly Scholars, working with students experiencing academic difficulty, changes of major, and other areas. Other duties may include: academic advising and planning courses towards graduation; assist students with strategies for success in their academics; advising students on academic probation; interpretation of curriculum sheets and flowcharts, articulation agreements, requirements towards degree, and online advising tools; College and University policies and procedures; process forms related to student's degree progress; quarterly advising workshops and programs; and former returning engineering students (Readmission). This position will also be responsible for building and maintaining effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, staff, industry, local schools, and the general public (e.g. parents).Up to (2) two positions available.

Required Qualifications 
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only) Bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; OR a Master's degree and one year of experience.Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills

•Skilled at counseling or advising individuals and/or in groups on complex student related matters, including multicultural, low-income, first generation college and other non-traditional or underserved student populations.
•Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
•Ability to work in an inclusive environment and recognize multicultural value systems and work accordingly.
•Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments, planning special events, and in implementing long-range program improvements.
•Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other departments, colleges and the university.
•One-to-one counseling skills and group advising skills. Ability to assess student needs (academic, social and personal) in a proactive manner and refer to appropriate campus resources if necessary.
•Demonstrated ability to handle difficult situations in a sensitive and professional manner and reach positive outcomes.
•Ability to understand and communicate strategic goals and plans to achieve them.
•Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to speak publicly, with experience in presenting in front of groups of people.
•Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
•Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.

•Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.

•Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

•Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
•Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
•Must be willing to attend trainings related to policies, procedures and technological advancement as it pertains to position requirements.
•This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date.
