Position Description

Penn State Scranton is seeking a full-time Associate Director of Academic Advising (Academic Advising Manager 3 or 4) who will oversee all aspects of academic advising for the campus under the direction of the Director of Academic Affairs (campus' Chief Academic Officer).

Duties

Academic Advising responsibilities include monitor student progress, oversee the assistance of students in academic warning and suspension, field questions from families about advising issues and student progress, handle complex advising problems. The Associate Director of Academic Advising also is responsible for advising exploratory students, managing enrollment decisions in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS), and providing consultation for admission of conditionally accepted students at the campus. In this position, the selected candidate will chair the campus advising council, write and revise campus advising policy, and direct advising assessment with a goal of maintaining a program of continuous improvement for advising staff and faculty advisers through direct communication and timely programming. The Associate Director will be expected to work closely with faculty advisers: direct and administer training; develop adviser training content; organize training sessions including one-on-one training for new advisers.

Serve as a point of contact for faculty and staff with questions related to advising and related academic policies. The position will oversee all aspects of New Student Orientation (NSO) including, but not limited to, developing content, training NSO advisers, managing NSO budget, determining appropriate NSO dates, planning the schedule, advising students, developing and presenting materials for parents, families and students. The Associate Director will supervise two full-time direct reports, one full-time shared report, and student workers, will manage the Advising Center, Division of Undergraduate Studies and New Student Orientation budgets, and will work with other departments to develop advising policies and procedures related to admissions and student retention. Expectation of collaboration with Advising Managers and DUS coordinators across the University to develop solutions to shared challenges.

Required Qualifications

This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher in an education or social science related discipline plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Additional years of academic advising experience in a multidisciplinary environment and supervisory experience are preferred. The successful candidate should be able to use available University data systems to drive processes and recommend changes to related areas. Serve as primary resource for Starfish Retention Solutions system. Serve on relevant campus, college, and University committees. Demonstrate proven ability to network and develop successful collaborative partnerships to benefit students.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with the use of student information and advising/retention systems (preferably PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Starfish, or similar) is preferred. Evidence of appropriate professional engagement and professional development activity (e.g., ACA, ACPA, NACADA).
