Position Description

UNCW’s University College seeks a system orientated, professional academic advisor to support first-year students and to serve as a lead technologist to support academic advising strategies. This role will oversee the training and support of academic advising software (Starfish) within the University College. This position will also support other campus-wide student success strategies and that create and increase efficiency in operations for academic advising services. In addition, this position will support the advising services delivered in the University College by serving as an academic advisor to a small caseload of students, participate in spring and summer orientation sessions, serve on assigned task forces or committees, and other duties as assigned to support the mission of the University College. A more detailed summary of the academic advising services this position is expected to provide is as follows:

  • Advises students on course selections appropriate to their academic and career goals
  • Assists students in making decisions about majors and careers
  • Maintains an accurate advising file for each advisee
  • Makes appropriate referrals to campus resources when problems require intervention and assists students in academic trouble with strategies for recovery
  • Monitors students’ academic performance and assists with university retention efforts
  • Assists students in the timely declaration of a major or pre-major

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in the areas of higher education, student services administration, student development, instructional administration, education, planning, counseling, or related field
  • Minimum one year of related work experience within a university or college setting
  • Experience extracting, analyzing, and compiling data to influence policy and practices within an organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and lead collaborative teams
  • Familiarity with technology platforms, student information systems
  • Demonstrated the ability to support advising technology needs, training and develop resources needed to deliver effective training opportunities
  • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and solid organizational skills, and a strong orientation to detail
  • Demonstrated skill in a systems oriented environment with demonstrated success in anticipating organizational needs and responding to in the moment requests.
  • Ability to manage time effectively in a busy environment
  • High level of initiative, attention to detail, and organizational skills
  • Proven interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse constituents
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Comfortable summarizing, compiling, and interpreting student data and reports
  • Ability to work with confidential material and sensitive matters with integrity, diplomacy, and discretion
  • Ability to collaborate with a broad range of student support professionals and leaders to inform a more integrated approach to student retention, persistence, and success efforts
  • Willingness to work flexible and extended schedule including weekends and evenings when needed
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, respect, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a higher education environment, including academic advising
  • Experience with direct administration and implementation of advising technology platforms or services (i.e. Starfish by Hobsons or EAB, other retention management systems)
  • Experience in providing services related to supporting first-year student populations, program evaluation and assessment
  • Demonstrated skill in exceptional written and oral communication with on campus constituencies (e.g., staff, faculty, students, managers, etc.)
  • Demonstrated project management experience within an organization
  • Demonstrated ability to apply current best practices in student development theory when developing/modifying policies and practices
  • Current experience with the use of data in advising and experience with data analytics software
