Position Description

Responsible for advising undergraduate English major students in the development of academic schedules appropriate for stated education goals. Takes a proactive approach to academic advising, seeking out contact with students and staff and providing advising services on request. Works with academic departments and other units within Undergraduate Studies to develop advising programs. Recommends changes and additions in existing policies and procedures to effect a successful advising program. Performs special projects as assigned by Undergraduate Studies.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years' relevant experience or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.

     

  • Prior student advising, counseling, customer service experience, or experience working one-on-one with people in a professional setting.

  • Computer skills to include experience with Microsoft Office and web-based applications.

  • Ability to interpret and explain policies to students, parents, faculty and staff.

  • Ability to extract complex academic information from various sources and maintain confidentiality.

  • Must have the unique ability to deal with people in a calm, confident manner and with complete objectivity. Attention to detail and the highest standard of integrity are imperative. Will have access to student data which are covered under the Family Educational Rights and privacy Act. Position requires a high level of discretion and knowledge of legal issues in relation to confidentiality of data

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of BOT and University rules and regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, supervisors, and interdepartmental personnel.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
