Position Description

The primary mission of the University Studies Program (UST) is to provide academic advisement and guidance to University Studies (undeclared) students, assisting them in course selection and entry into a major. The UST staff provides academic advisement and serves as a central source of academic information for undeclared and transitional students.Under the general direction of the University Studies Program Associate Director, the Academic Advisor I is responsible for advising all undeclared students at the University, assisting them in developing degree programs, and choosing majors best suited to their interests and abilities. The Academic Advisor I works cooperatively with other members of the University Studies Program to set goals and propose solutions to advising issues that affect the quality of services provided for UST and transitional students. The Academic Advisor I helps in the development of programs and events for prospective students, and supports programs and University-wide initiatives for entering freshman and transfer students. The Academic Advisor I may be asked to teach courses related to the mission of the UST Program


  • Advises and informs UST students about degree requirements and advises students in making appropriate academic choices; provides advisement for undeclared students guiding them to make to make appropriate educational decisions concerning degree programs that fulfill personal and career objectives; assists students in transition between majors or concentrations to make appropriate academic choices.
  • Advises incoming UST freshmen and transfer students during orientation periods; assists students in selecting courses; advises students on applicability of transfer credits.
  • Supports programs to monitor the progress of students in special academic circumstances (including those on probation, returning adults, students with disabilities, underrepresented students, and others) to improve retention of all enrolled students and provides special assistance in efforts to increase the retention of minority students.
  • Coordinates academic advisement with other campus units and refers students to appropriate academic departments and support services.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of higher education or academic advising experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
