Position Description

Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising, this position will help supplement major advising by serving as a resource for undergraduate students, providing developmental advising and guidance on college requirements, policies & procedures, opportunities for community involvement, and campus resources (case load assignment will be based on need). In addition to advisement duties, the Academic Advisor III will work closely with the Director of Academic Advising to systematically develop and evaluate programming strategies in alignment with the college’s retention goals. This is a senior position will provide leadership and guidance to other advising staff. This position will travel between campuses.

Duties

Student Advising — 60%

  • Provide knowledgeable/specialized academic counseling to new and continuing undergraduate students — the case load may include, but is not limited to, undergraduate students identified through proactive advising strategies, students who are academically at-risk, students identified through the college’s CARE network, students identified through the admission’s process, and other student populations as needed
  • Supplement departmental/major advising by helping students navigate their academic requirements, the course selection process, college-wide policies and procedures, and the degree audit report; refer students to major advisors and various offices as appropriate
  • Partner with the undergraduate educational departments and student support service offices to offer consistent developmental advising for undergraduate students in various formats (1:1’s, workshops, drop-in advising, email, etc.)
  • Partner with undergraduate educational departments to develop academic plans, and perform progress checks throughout a student’s academic career, including preliminary graduation audits
  • Advise students about co-curricular learning opportunities, such as general internship information, study aboard opportunities, student success workshops/events, and other events/activities as appropriate; refer to associated offices as needed
  • Establish and accurately maintain student advisement files (including electronic files); prepare monthly activity report and analysis
  • Have a thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements
  • Adhere to the institution’s interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to other advising staff as needed

Retention, Data, & Program Support — 30%

  • Act as a liaison to college-wide retention committee, assist the Director of Academic Advising with the systematic development and evaluation of programming strategies in alignment with the college’s retention goals
  • Assist the Director of Academic Advising with data management and tracking; training and development; and other related activities that facilitate student retention, persistence, and success for undergraduate students
  • Help improve advising practices through participation in the Academic Advisement Committee
  • Participate in the evaluation and assessment of the academic advisement program

Non-Essential — 10%

  • Engage in professional development activities, including but not limited to, memberships in professional organizations, attendance at conferences, workshops, division and department training sessions; stay current with information technology skills
  • Attend, lead and participate in college committees as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Student Affairs, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, or Counseling & Guidance from an accredited college or university
  • 4 or more years of experience directly in academic advising, guidance and counseling or equivalency in higher education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and philosophies including CAS advising standards, NACADA Core Values for Academic Advising, and student development theories
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required; must be detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritizing skills; strong interpersonal skills are required
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, and strong ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office Suite and student databases
  • Ability to develop supportive and collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Knowledge and experience in working with historically underrepresented student groups including ethnic minority communities, first generation college students, LGBTQI, and students with disabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a creative and dynamic environment
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion and recognizes the confidential nature of ArtCenter business
  • Demonstrated experience in and a commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within Art Center’s diverse communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, or related student services from an accredited college or university
  • Knowledge of Datatel/Colleague/Student Planning Module, or other higher education-related student databases and tracking systems
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Knowledge of art and design education
  • Proficiency in a second language (other than English)
