Position Description



  • Provide academic advising to undergraduate Liberal Arts students and students in other Colleges interested in entering the College of the Liberal Arts.
  • Advise students on academic policies and procedures, resolve procedural academic problems, monitor progress of student advisees, and maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • Serve as first point of contact regarding your major(s) for assigned academic department(s), other Penn State locations, and student services offices.
  • Consult with Department Heads and Undergraduate Officers on departmental initiatives in undergraduate education as assigned, and assist with the development of strategies to meet goals.
  • Participate in undergraduate orientation and registration activities and presentations to students and families.
  • Coordinate a project or program, related to student success, advising strategies, diversity and inclusion, or data analysis, for the unit or the College and act as a liaison to units in the University affiliated with that project or program.
  • Assist in student recruitment through formal presentations, meetings with prospective students and families, and participation in programs for prospective students.
  • Represent the College at on-campus and off-campus events and programs that may require occasional weekend and evening hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic Advising experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with international students particularly desirable.
  • Competencies critical to success include: attention to detail; excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking; experience working with a diverse body of students; demonstrated time management skills, which includes ability to manage multiple responsibilities and to support College events and programs; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; adaptability to change, and ability to adapt to new technology and utilize it extensively in daily functions.
