Position Description 
Academic Advisor Humboldt State University Close: April 6, 2015(Job #15-23) Academic Advisor, Student Services Professional II (SSP II) $3,367—$4,786/month. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. This is a full-time, benefited, probationary, 11/12 pay plan (work months with pay and benefits over 12 months), ongoing position in the Academic and Career Advising Center.Position Summary: Person in this position acts as primary academic advisor to students in designated majors, initially undeclared, and as a supplementary advisor for undergraduate students seeking information and clarification on degree progress, academic policies and procedures, all university requirements, and status of transfer work. In addition, this position provides advising and administrative support for various Academic & Career Advising Center activities and cooperative endeavors such as participation in orientation, faculty advisor training, withdrawal counseling, major and career exploration activities and various retention and student success initiatives. Develops relationships with faculty and academic department staff.

Duties
Duties: As primary academic advisor for first and second year students in designated majors, initially undeclared, plan, promote and participate in activities to encourage students to successfully complete their degree; review academic progress towards all-university requirements, help build schedules, explain academic policies and procedures, advise students on academic probation and help them return to good academic standing; act as mentor and advocate. Act as supplementary advisor and resource to all undergraduates which includes meeting with undergraduates to review all-university requirements; major exploration and four year academic plans, advise on academic policies and procedures, counsel withdrawing students, and referral to campus resources that support student success. In addition, the person in this position will perform administrative and advising duties in support of retention and student success initiatives campus wide and will develop relationships with faculty and academic department staff.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications 
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and two years of experience providing university student services related to academic progress and promoting student success. Master’s degree may be substituted for one year of experience in a university setting.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The successful candidate will demonstrate a supportive, encouraging approach to students, demonstrate a strong commitment to student success, must have excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, be able to write well and make effective public presentations, and demonstrate sound and mature judgment. The person who fills this position must have the ability to understand, interpret, and communicate complex policies and procedures clearly, thoroughly, and tactfully. The successful candidate must be able to work independently as well as cultivate a cooperative, communicative and collegial attitude towards office colleagues and members of the university community. This position requires basic data entry skills, the ability to extract and analyze information from a complex student information system, interpret and explain reports and academic transcripts, skill in word processing and basic computer programs such as Excel and Power Point.

Preferred Qualifications 
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of CSU and HSU undergraduate degree requirements, academic policies and procedures, curriculum, campus resources and techniques for improving student success or the demonstrated ability to become quickly familiar with these areas. Experience with PeopleSoft is highly desirable.
