Position Description

The University College at UNCW seeks a professional academic advisor to support first-year students and will be expected to provide accurate academic policy and curricular information to assist in short-term and long-term academic program planning and career goal clarification.

Duties

  • The University College supports students as they explore undergraduate curriculum and career paths, prepare to declare an appropriate major, and succeed in their transition to UNCW .

  • The University College (UC) serves several student populations to include freshmen, select transfer, early college, military student, first-year spring admit and pre-professional students at UNCW.

  • The University College at UNCW seeks a professional academic advisor to support first-year students and will be expected to provide accurate academic policy and curricular information to assist in short-term and long-term academic program planning and career goal clarification.

  • This position will be working with all students served by the University College to include freshmen, transfer, military, and pre-professional students.

  • The advisor will provide meaningful academic advising, planning and support to a caseload of students at the time of their admission to UNCW until their acceptance into a major department.

  • This position will also participate in admissions programing for prospective and accepted students, advise during fall and spring orientations and collaborate with various departments to coordinate various services and programs as needed for the University College.

  • UC academic advisors work together with their students to help promote personal development, discuss career and life goals while monitoring student academic progress.

  • Academic advising services are vital in supporting students’ transitions from high school to college therefore this position will also be responsible for supporting university-wide retention initiates that are designed to support students in achieving academic success.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must (1) hold a master’s degree;
  • (2) have at least 1 year work experience within a related university or college setting;
  • (3) possess strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and effective organizational skills; and
  • (4) have the ability to manage time effectively in a busy environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and function effectively in a team oriented and diverse work environment.
  • Ability to abide by the ethical standards and guidelines for academic advising.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with the university community.
  • Possess strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task and prioritize workload in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills, along with effective listening and interpretative skills, in order to clearly communicate information and ideas.
  • Proficient use of following computer programs – Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a university academic advising setting.
  • Preference for work experience related to managing a student caseload, administering academic programs and services related to supporting freshmen, transfer, military and pre-professional student populations, program evaluation and assessment.
  • Working knowledge of student development theory, advising strategies, and best practices to support student success initiatives in an educational environment.
  • Ability to effectively work with diverse populations.
  • Experience managing confidential data.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and an ability to learn new programs/technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and to successfully identify, organize and complete multiple tasks independently and within a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and superior organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Banner and other student success technology platforms (i.e. Starfish, EAB).
