The School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut is seeking a full-time, professional staff Academic Advisor (Academic Advisor I, UCP 5) at the Storrs campus. This advisor would join a dynamic team of Academic Advisors, higher education and student development professionals by training, that primarily advise first- and second-year engineering students in registering for their foundational coursework, determining a preliminary plan of study, and navigating the nuances of their transition to the college experience. This position will report to the Director of Undergraduate Advising and will serve one or more academic departments within the School of Engineering, with a caseload of 250-350 students. In addition to advising current engineering students, the Academic Advisor will communicate with prospective students and families, faculty advisors, and other campus partners to ensure a high level of student support and success. Some additional opportunities may include teaching a first-year seminar course, managing an engineering tutoring center, developing a targeted program for students on scholastic probation, and/or assisting in the creation of a new peer advisor program. The School of Engineering seeks a highly independent and team-oriented advisor, with creative ideas about student support and development, to fill this Academic Advisor role.
The Academic Advisor will work primarily with students and faculty on undergraduate academic matters. These duties include:
- Accessible and available to deliver quality advising to students in planning their academic program.
- Advise students in specific curriculum decisions, including the appropriate choice and scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines and related matters.
- Provide additional counseling to warned students, those with academic difficulties and students contemplating withdrawal.
- Review and make recommendations regarding warning, exclusion, suspension or dismissal.
- Audit student records to determine progress toward meeting academic requirements and to assess eligibility to graduate.
- Assist in planning and implementing scheduling and registration activities, orientation programs and other activities, as assigned.
- Serve as resource for students, faculty, parents and others with questions about programs or academic policies; makes referrals as appropriate.
- Maintain appropriate files and records and may assist in compiling statistical reports.
- Assist in writing and/or editing informational and publicity materials.
- Provide information regarding various specialized programs and requirements and opportunities for scholarships/awards.
- May assist in recruiting new students and/or seeking job placement opportunities for graduating seniors.
- Assist in reviewing student transcripts and in making admissions decisions regarding transfer of major within or into the School of Engineering.
- Perform related duties and special assignments as required.

- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- One to two years of full-time, post-baccalaureate experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to relate well to students, families, faculty, and other campus partners
- Ability and knowledge to support STEM undergraduate students, with an appreciation for the rigor of their academic experience
- Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, or related field; 3-5 years of academic advising experience
- Knowledge of relevant student development theories and advising philosophies
- Knowledge of relevant academic programs including STEM, the range and structure of majors, general education, and school and college requirements
- Experience in the interpretation of academic policies, regulations, and procedures
- Knowledge of online student records software, such as PeopleSoft; Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
