Position Description

The Academic Advising Center at Towson University is currently accepting applications for an Academic Advisor to provide advising services to students in the process of transferring to TU and contributing to programs in the Advising Center. Academic Advisor will work closely with Admissions Office staff in the Transfer Center and may accompany Admissions staff on visits to Community Colleges. Academic Advisor will be expected to be familiar with TU's academic programs, policies, and procedures. Academic Advisor will assist in planning and implementing the advising component of the Transfer Orientation Program.


Provide appropriate and effective academic advising to students in the process of transferring to TU, from the pre-admissions process through post-matriculation. Advisors will spend work hours in both the Academic Advising Center and the Transfer Center. Advise first-year freshmen in one-to-one, small group, large group, and online formats. Assist with the planning and implementation of Orientation for transfer students and freshmen. Participate in advising programs for students on academic alert, academic warning, and academic probation; enrolling freshmen for their first-semester courses; serving as liaison to campus partners.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience advising students in a college or university setting. The selected candidate must have excellent skills in speaking, listening, and writing; ability to exercise sound professional judgment in relation to dealing with students and colleagues; fundamental knowledge of student development models; working knowledge of student services and programs in higher education; strong computer skills; and knowledge and experience with student information systems and analytic software.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to make presentations to large groups. Evidence of experience working with college transfer students.
