Position Description

Reporting to the Interim Director of Academic Services and Learning Resources, the Academic Services Fellow is a one-year position that will work cooperatively within Academic Services, while gaining experience executing a variety of academic support services programs.

 

Duties

Academic Support & Advising:

Meet individually with students; assist students in developing effective skills and habits (e.g., time management, test preparation, reading strategies)

Develop and facilitate academic skill-building workshops to help students achieve academic success

Assist students in clarifying their academic (major, minor, etc.) and co-curricular interests (study abroad, academic internships, etc.); connect to relevant campus resources and partner

Program Management:

Work collaboratively with the Assistant Director to manage tutoring services, including the STEM+E Workshop, a tutoring program for quantitative-based courses (e.g., natural/physical sciences, economics, and mathematics)

Work collaboratively with the Assistant Director to coordinate and supervise PAL (Peer - Assisted Learning) the College's Supplemental Instruction program for Chemistry

Marketing & Outreach:

Help coordinate outreach efforts to increase visibility of Academic Services on campus for students, faculty, and staff

Represent Academic Services and promote programs and services at events across campus

Assist in maintaining and updating the Academic Services section of the Holy Cross website

Develop content and manage presence on various social media platforms, as appropriateOther duties as assignedLearning Outcomes

Gain experience working in a college student services office

Gain progressively increasing experience in facilitating academic skill development in college students, through both individual appointments and group workshops

Gain understanding of student advising

Gain understanding of Supplemental Instruction (SI); attend and complete SI Supervisor training at University of Missouri, Kansas City

Enhance understanding of managing peer-led support programs

Gain understanding of various publicity tools and identify effective use of these tools to reach target audiences

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in psychology, social work, education, or a related field. Master's degree or graduate level coursework in a relevant field, preferred. High level of interest in higher education and academic development, previous experience valuable Familiarity with academic skill development, learning strategies, college tutoring programs, and/or Supplemental Instruction is valuable. Knowledge and understanding of the academic rigor of college life, specifically at a highly selective, private, Jesuit liberal arts college. Ability to manage large quantity of detailed information; remain calm and professional in changing circumstances; flexibility and dependability. Excellent oral and written communication skills across campus constituencies (e.g. students, staff, academic administrators, faculty, parents). Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and empathize with students, while also providing constructive feedback and suggestions. Proven ability to organize, solve problems, and complete projects with minimal supervision and work as part of a team. Sensitivity to issues faced by students from diverse backgrounds. Competence with Microsoft Office and Google Applications required; competence with content management tools like Drupal, desired. Knowledge and experience with a variety of social media platforms. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends
