Position Description

State University of New York at Oswego Academic Success Business Advisor The Advisement Center at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for a 12-month professional Academic Success Advisor staff position.

The Academic Success Business Advisor will provide academic advisement and support to incoming freshmen and transfer students during their first year at SUNY Oswego. The Advisor will collaborate with School of Business departments to develop appropriate action plan for students regarding their course schedule and curricular needs. The Advisor will also assist students in achieving their academic goals by helping them navigate through the challenges and demands of college and will be an intricate part in improving retention support efforts and inspiring students to a timely degree completion.

Duties

The Academic Success Advisor will also:

  • Advise a caseload of incoming freshmen, transfers students and register them for their first semester of courses.
  • Interact daily with students vie email, phone, and respond to student questions or concern.
  • Advise incoming students during summer orientation programs.
  • Collaborate with School of Business departments to ensure accurate academic policies and degree requirements.
  • Document student progress using Starfish and Degree Works.
  • Research and implement best practices within academic advising, academic success strategies, and other areas pertaining to the Advisement Center needs.
  • Research and implement best practices in working with first generation college students, diverse student populations, international students, and underrepresented student populations.
  • Collaborate with Advisement Center team members with collection and evaluation of data for advising and assessment purpose.
  • Assist Business faculty and students with advising issues such as registration, off-campus approval forms, study abroad programs and senior checklists.
  • Adhere to strict confidentiality and other ethical standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition, the Academic Success Business Advisor will be expected to display a demonstrated potential for excellence in presentation and scholarship, commitment to undergraduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

  • Demonstrated student-centered approach and passion for student success with a focus on meeting the needs of diverse student populations
  • Professional experience assessing student academic needs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, business, counseling, student personnel, or job-related field
  • Experience in the utilization of computer technology tracking systems such as Banner, Degree Works, and/ or Starfish.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and advocating for culturally diverse student populations, students with disabilities, and/ or English language learners.
  • Minimum two-year academic advising or student services experience.
  • Computer literacy including competency in Microsoft Office programs.
