Position Description

Academic and Student Success Advisors are an integral part of Exploratory Advising and play a significant role in our renewed focus on increasing student success, retention, and graduation. They work with students in their first year (or two) and focus on assisting students in successfully transitioning to college, choosing a major, and becoming academically qualified to declare their major.

Duties

Serve as the primary resource and advisor for all academic and student success related needs for students who are either undecided (i.e., unsure of what they want to study) or undeclared (i.e., are not academically eligible to declare their desired major), as assigned; Develop supportive, mentoring relationships with each individual advisee. Maintain knowledge of each individual advisee’s goals, educational plans, challenges, and needed resources; Engage students in exploring and committing to their academic major in a timely manner. Maintain knowledge of major declaration criteria and monitor student interest and eligibility. Advise students in declaring a major and facilitate the success of students’ transitions into academic majors and/or programs. Advise students who are not eligible to declare their preferred major and assist students in pursuing alternate major options when necessary.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field (e.g., social work, counseling, education). Three years of professional work experience required. Professional work experience within a public higher education setting in an academic advising and/or retention-related position preferred.
