Johns Hopkins University invites applications and nominations for a dynamic, visionary and experienced leader to serve as Assistant Dean for Academic Advising for the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The Office of Academic Advising, located on the beautiful Homewood campus in north Baltimore, Maryland, serves the needs of undergraduates by promoting intellectual exploration and academic excellence. The office advises all freshmen in Arts and Sciences, oversees progress of Arts and Sciences undergraduates to graduation, offers services such as tutoring and mentoring, and supports faculty in curricular innovation and student service. The successful candidate will assume the role at an exciting time as a commission of faculty, staff, students, alumni and administrators examine undergraduate education at Hopkins (see https://provost.jhu.edu/education/second-commission-on-undergraduate-education). The assistant dean will be expected to bring energy and creativity to the role as recommendations from the commission are prioritized and implemented.
Reporting to the Vice Dean for Undergraduate Education, the Assistant Dean leads and supervises the staff of Academic Advising: eight professional advisors, four academic support service staff, and four administrative staff members. The assistant dean will collaborate with the vice dean to assess existing programs and identify and implement innovative advising and academic services models and programs. The successful candidate will also take a central role in designing and implementing new programs and strategies for the mentoring of students by faculty. The Assistant d\Dean will provide ongoing assessment of the office to determine organizational or strategic changes needed to improve services and deepen the office’s strong role in the campus’s intellectual life. This person will help define, implement and enforce academic policies and give support to faculty advisors and departments, and will develop and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with faculty advisors and the academic departments of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The Assistant Dean will work closely and collaboratively with other academic offices and committees, including the Whiting School of Engineering, the Registrar, Admissions, Student Affairs, pre-professional and career services, study abroad, athletics, parent services and disability services. The person will also guide the use of technology to effectively provide advising services and information to students, including online degree auditing. He or she will also serve as a senior academic advisor, serving a reduced caseload of freshmen advisees, as well as overseeing all undergraduates’ academic standing and graduation from the Krieger School.

- The successful candidate will possess at least a Master’s degree, Ph.D. preferred, with proven ability to lead and manage a technology-driven, student-oriented academic advising and support operation.
- A clear vision for academic advising in a competitive academic environment, a high level of comfort with information technology and its application to advising, knowledge of current national trends in academic advising, experience with assessment and its use in shaping policies and procedures, demonstrated ability to create and manage programs to serve students in a diverse and multicultural environment, and knowledge of management techniques that improve client services are all important factors in the selection of the assistant dean.
- Familiarity and experience with the academic environment as a faculty member, administrator or advisor is critical. The person in this position also will demonstrate a vision of effective service, possess strong leadership, management and supervisory skills, and have experience in providing academic services to students and faculty. Demonstrated experience and commitment to the development of a continuous learning and service culture is required. Also essential is supervisory and managerial experience with a diverse workforce where goals are frequently achieved through use of influence rather than direct supervision. Experience with the creation and launching of service delivery programs in a highly decentralized environment is important.
