Position Description

Radford University seeks an energetic individual for the administrative professional position of Assistant Director of Advising in the Artis College of Science and Technology. The Assistant Director of Advising will provide appropriate and effective academic advising to an assigned caseload of students as well as perform integrated academic advising and consultation of prospective, current, and former students within the Artis College of Science and Technology.


The position responsibilities include assess academic level and advise on academic programs and changes, develop academic plans and class schedules, assist students in exploring careers, evaluate academic abilities and goals, present academic information to orientation groups, potential students and parents, analyze applications, transfer evaluations, and transcripts for entry into the university, maintain appropriate records and sustain an environment of academic and professional excellence for students and educational team members. The Assistant Director of Advising supports student life and learning through student advocacy, academic coaching, customer service, campus and community referrals, institutional outreach and course scheduling. The Assistant Director of Advising works closely with all campus departments to support retention and persistence endeavors.

Required Qualifications


Advanced degree and demonstrated experience in education, counseling or advising or related field or equivalent training, education, or experience Experience in planning and implementing programming for student recruitment and/or retention activities, or related events like commencement and workshops Experience in making independent judgements, analyzing and solving problems, managing multiple tasks, working independently as a self-starter Proficient with current office software such as Microsoft Office Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports

Preferred Qualifications

Academic advising experience in a higher education setting Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues Experience participating in the delivery of in-service training to practitioners on academic advising and information procedures Experience interpreting, applying university, state and federal policies/procedures Previous experience/knowledge working with Banner
